ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Raqāshī narrated to us; Rāfiʿ ibn Salamah ibn Ziyād narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī al-Jaʿd al-Ashjaʿī narrated to me, from Juʿayl al-Ashjaʿī, who said:
I took part in one of the campaigns of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while riding a mare of mine that was thin and weak. Because of that I fell to the rear of the army. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with me and said, “Ride on, horseman!” I replied, “O Messenger of Allah, she is scrawny and weak.” The Prophet ﷺ then raised a small whip he was carrying, struck the mare with it, and said, “O Allah, bless him in it.” I swear I soon had to hold her head back lest she outpace everyone, and I later sold one of her foals for twelve thousand.
Al-Nasā’ī (2) transmits the same report through Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Raqāshī.
Abū Bakr ibn Abī Khaythamah likewise relates it from ʿUbayd ibn Yaʿīsh, from Zayd ibn al-Khubbāb, from Rāfiʿ ibn Salamah al-Ashjaʿī.
Al-Bukhārī says in his History (3): Rāfiʿ ibn Ziyād ibn al-Jaʿd ibn Abī al-Jaʿd reported to me from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, the brother of Sālim, from Juʿayl, and he mentioned the narration.
Another report:
Al-Bayhaqī (4) states: Abū ʿl-Ḥusayn ibn al-Faḍl al-Qaṭṭān in Baghdad informed us, Abū Sahl ibn Ziyād al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Shādhān al-Jawharī narrated to us, Zakariyyā ibn ʿAdī narrated to us, Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Kaysān, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “I have married a woman.” He ﷺ asked, “Did you look at her? For there is something about the eyes of the Anṣār.” The man replied, “I have indeed looked at her.” The Prophet ﷺ continued, “For how much did you marry her?” When the man mentioned the dowry, he ﷺ said, “It is as though they are chiselling gold and silver out of the flanks of these mountains! We have nothing today to give you, but I will send you on a mission from which you will profit.”
He then dispatched a detachment to the Banū ʿAbs and sent the man with them. After some time the man returned and said, “O Messenger of Allah, my camel is so worn out that she will not rise.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered him his hand as though helping him to stand, then went to the camel and tapped her with his foot.
Abū Hurayrah added, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, I saw that camel outstrip the one that was leading the herd.”
Muslim (5) includes this ḥadīth in his Ṣaḥīḥ, related by Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn from Marwān.
