Likewise, it was transmitted by al-Tirmidhī (1) and al-Nasā’ī (2) through Maḥmūd ibn Ghailān, and by Ibn Mājah (3) through Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr ibn Sayyār; all of them relate it from ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmar. Al-Tirmidhī commented: “A ḥadith that is ḥasan, ṣaḥīḥ, and gharīb; we do not know it except through the narration of Abū Jaʿfar al-Khaṭmī.”
Aḥmad (4) also recorded it—through Muʾammal ibn Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Khaṭmī, from ʿUmārah ibn Khuzaimah, from ʿUthmān ibn Ḥunayf—and mentioned the same report.
Al-Nasā’ī (5) relates it as well, through Muḥammad ibn Maʿmar, from Ḥabbān, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, with that wording.
He then records it once more (6) through Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā, from Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā, from Muʿādh ibn Hishām, from his father, from Abū Jaʿfar, from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn Ḥunayf, from his uncle ʿUthmān ibn Ḥunayf.
This version differs from the preceding ones; it seems that Abū Jaʿfar al-Khaṭmī possessed the ḥadith through both lines of transmission—and Allah knows best.
Al-Bayhaqī and al-Ḥākim have likewise reported it, through Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān, from Aḥmad ibn Shabīb ibn Saʿīd al-Ḥabaṭī, from his father, from Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Madanī, from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn Ḥunayf, from his uncle ʿUthmān ibn Ḥunayf, who said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a blind man came to him and complained of having lost his sight. He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have no guide, and the matter has become very hard for me.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied:
‘Go to the place of ablution, perform wuduʾ, then pray two rakʿahs and say:
O Allah, I ask You and turn to You by means of Your Prophet Muḥammad, the Prophet of mercy. O Muḥammad, I turn by you to my Lord that He may restore my sight. O Allah, grant him intercession for me, and grant me intercession for myself.’
ʿUthmān said, ‘By Allah, we had not dispersed, nor had our conversation been prolonged, before the man entered as though he had never suffered any blindness at all.’ (7)
Al-Bayhaqī added: ‘Hishām ad-Dastawāʾī has also narrated it from Abū Jaʿfar, from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl, from his uncle ʿUthmān ibn Ḥunayf.’
Another ḥadith:
Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah said: ‘Muḥammad ibn Bishr narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar narrated to me…’
