He also transmitted—through al-Ḥākim, from al-Aṣamm, from Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār, from Yūnus ibn Bukayr, from al-Aʿmash, from Shamir ibn ʿAṭiyyah, from one of his teachers—who said:
A woman came carrying a son who had begun to move about and said, “O Messenger of Allah, this boy of mine has never spoken since the day he was born.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Bring him closer to me.” When she drew him near, he said to the child, “Who am I?” The boy answered, “You are the Messenger of Allah.”
The Incident of the Boy Who Used to Suffer Seizures and Was Cured by the Prophet’s Supplication
This episode has already been mentioned through the narrations of Usāmah ibn Zayd, Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, and Yaʿlā ibn Murrah al-Thaqafī, together with the story of the camel—the ḥadīth in its entirety.
Imām Aḥmad said: “Yazīd narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us; from Farqad al-Sabkhī; from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr; from Ibn ʿAbbās:
A woman brought her child to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, he is afflicted by a lamam—a devilish touch—and whenever we sit down to eat he attacks us and spoils our food.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed his hand over the boy’s chest and prayed for him. The boy heaved violently, and something like a small black puppy came out of him and ran away.” This version is recorded solely by Aḥmad.
Farqad al-Sabkhī was a righteous man, though his memory was poor. Nevertheless Shuʿbah and others narrated from him, and his reports were accepted with leniency. What he relates here is supported by earlier narrations, and Allah knows best.
It is possible that this account is identical to the previously cited story, and it may also be a different incident altogether; Allah knows best.
Another report on the subject:
Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: “Muḥammad ibn Marzūq narrated to us; Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Ṣadaqah—meaning Ibn Mūsā—narrated to us; Farqad—meaning al-Sabkhī—narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
The Prophet ﷺ was in Mecca when a woman from the Anṣār came to him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, this malignant being has overpowered me.’ He replied, ‘If you endure patiently what you are experiencing, you will come on the Day of Resurrection with no sins upon you and no reckoning.’ She said, ‘By the One…’
