Hishām ibn ʿAmmār relates in his book al-Baʿth, in the chapter entitled “The Speech of the Dead and Their Marvels”:
Al-Ḥakam ibn Hishām al-Thaqafī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUmayr narrated to us; from Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh al-ʿAbsī, who said:
“My brother, al-Rabīʿ ibn Ḥirāsh, fell sick. I nursed him until he died, and we set about preparing his body. When we approached him, he lifted the shroud from his face and said, ‘Peace be upon you.’
“We replied, ‘And upon you be peace—yet you are dead!’
“He said, ‘Indeed, but after leaving you I met my Lord, who received me with relief and fragrance, and with a Lord who is not angry. He clothed me in garments of green silk. I asked Him to allow me to bring you glad tidings, and He granted me permission. Matters are exactly as you see them, so keep to the straight path, draw close, give good news and do not drive people away.’
“When he finished speaking, it was as if a pebble had dropped into water.”
Hishām then furnished numerous chains of transmission for this report, and it forms the conclusion of his book. It is a very unusual ḥadīth.
Al-Bayhaqī said: ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdān informed us; Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṣaffār narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Yūnus al-Kudaymī narrated to us; Shāṣūnah ibn ʿUbayd, Abū Muḥammad al-Yamānī—having departed from ʿAdan at a village called al-Ḥardah—narrated to me from Muʿarriḍ ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿarriḍ ibn Muʿayqīb al-Yamāmī, from his father, from his grandfather, who said:
“I performed the Farewell Pilgrimage. I entered a house in Mecca where I saw the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—his face shining like the full moon. I heard something wondrous from him. A man brought to him a newborn boy on the very day of his birth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked the infant, ‘Who am I?’ The child replied, ‘You are the Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘You have spoken truly. May Allah bless you.’
“After that, the child never spoke another word until he reached adulthood. My father said, ‘We used to call him Mubārak al-Yamāmah.’”
Shāṣūnah added, “I would pass by Maʿmar, yet I never heard him utter a single word.”
