ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb said, “Messenger of Allah, allow me to rise and kill him.”
The Prophet replied, “O ʿUmar, do you not know that a truly forbearing man is but a step away from prophethood?”
He then turned to the Bedouin and said, “What moved you to utter what you did—speaking falsehood and showing me no respect in my own gathering?”
The man retorted, mocking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “And you address me as well? By al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā, I shall never believe in you until this desert lizard believes in you!” He pulled the lizard from his sleeve and tossed it down before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ called out, “O lizard!” The lizard answered him in clear, eloquent Arabic that everyone could hear: “Here I am, ready to obey, O adornment of those who will arrive on the Day of Resurrection!”
He asked, “Whom do you worship, O lizard?” It replied, “The One whose Throne is in the heaven, whose authority is on the earth, whose path is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose punishment is in the Fire.”
He then said, “And who am I, O lizard?” It replied, “You are the Messenger of the Lord of all worlds and the Seal of the Prophets. Prosperous is the one who believes you; doomed is the one who denies you.”
The Bedouin exclaimed, “By Allah, I will not follow hearsay after what my own eyes have seen! I came to you today with no one on earth more hateful to me than you; now you are dearer to me than my father, my eyesight, and even my own self. I love you inwardly and outwardly, in private and in public. I testify that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah.”
The Prophet said, “Praise be to Allah who guided you through me. This religion is ever superior; nothing can surpass it. It is accepted only with prayer, and prayer is accepted only with Qur’an.”
The man said, “Then teach me.” He taught him: “Say: He is Allah, One.” The Bedouin said, “Give me more, for I have never heard—in long or concise expression—anything finer than this.”
The Prophet replied, “O Bedouin, this is the word of Allah, not poetry. If you recite ‘Say: He is Allah, One’ once, you receive the reward of reading one-third of the Qur’an; recite it twice and you receive the reward of two-thirds; recite it three times and you receive the reward of the entire Qur’an.”
The Bedouin said, “How excellent is our God! He accepts little and gives in abundance.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “Do you have any wealth?” He replied, “Among all Banū Sulaym there is no man poorer than I.”
The Prophet ﷺ turned to his Companions: “Give to him.” They gave until he became well-off.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf then said, “Messenger of Allah, he has with me a ten-month-pregnant she-camel, of a breed below the Bukhtī yet superior to an Aghrā—swift to overtake, never overtaken. It was gifted to me on the Day of Tabūk, and I seek nearness to Allah by giving it to the Bedouin.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “You have described your she-camel; now describe the wealth that awaits you with Allah on the Day of Resurrection.”
He replied, “Gladly.” The Prophet said, “You shall have a she-camel fashioned from a hollow pearl, its legs of green chrysolite and its neck of yellow chrysolite, bearing a howdah, and on
