whose occupant was being tormented, whereupon his companion said, “He is being punished for something that was not considered major.” The Prophet then ordered a fresh palm-twig to be placed on the grave and remarked, “Perhaps his punishment will be eased so long as this remains moist.” (1)
Another chain from him:
Imām Aḥmad (2) said: ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us; Maʿmar informed us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥafṣ, from Yaʿlā ibn Murrah al-Thaqafī, who said:
“I witnessed three things with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
-
While we were travelling with him, we passed by a camel that was being made to draw water. When it saw the Prophet it groaned and laid its neck on the ground. The Prophet ﷺ stopped beside it and said, ‘Where is the owner of this camel?’ The man came, and the Prophet said, ‘Sell it to me.’ He replied, ‘No; rather, I give it to you as a gift.’ The Prophet said, ‘No—sell it to me.’ He answered, ‘No; we present it to you as a gift, though it is the only means of livelihood for a household that owns nothing else.’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Since you have told me its situation, it has complained of excessive labour and insufficient fodder; so treat it well.’
-
We travelled on until we halted at a campsite, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down to sleep. A tree split the earth, came over to shade him, and then returned to its place. When he awoke I mentioned it to him, and he said, ‘It was a tree that asked its Lord for permission to greet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and He granted it.’
-
We moved on and passed by a water-spring. A woman came to him with her son, who was possessed. The Prophet ﷺ took the boy by the nose and said, ‘Come out, for I am Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.’ We then continued on our journey. When we returned and passed by that spring, the woman came with some carrots (3) and milk. He told her to take back the carrots, but instructed his Companions to drink the milk. He asked her about the boy and she replied, ‘By the One who sent you with the truth, we have seen no sign of trouble from him since you left.’ (4)
Another route from him:
Imām Aḥmad (5) said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us; ʿUthmān ibn Ḥakīm narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz informed me, from Yaʿlā ibn Murrah, who said:
‘I saw three things from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that no one before me had seen, and no one after me will see.
We set out with him on a journey. When we were somewhere along the road, we passed by a woman sitting with her son. She said, “Messenger of Allah, this boy has been afflicted, and we too suffer because of him; he is seized—how many times a day I do not know.” He said, “Hand him to me.” She lifted the boy up to him, and he placed him between himself and the saddle-pad. He then opened the boy’s mouth, blew into it three times, and said, “In the name of Allah; I am the servant of Allah—be gone, enemy of Allah!” He then handed him back to her and said, “Meet us here when we return, and tell us what has happened.”
We went on and later returned, and found her in the same place with three sheep. He said, “How is your boy?” She said, “By the One who sent you with the truth…"
