It was also transmitted through the route of Makkī ibn Ibrāhīm, from Fāʾid Abū al-Warqāʾ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā, from the Prophet ﷺ, in wording similar to that related from Ibn ʿAbbās.
The narration of Abū Hurayrah:
The jurist Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥāmid said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥamdān informed us; ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn Bujayr informed us; Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Jarīr narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ toward a certain area. We came to a walled garden where there was a draught camel; when the camel approached, it lifted its head, recognized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and laid the front of its neck upon the ground.
The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “We are more entitled to prostrate to you than this beast!”
He replied,
“Glory be to Allah! Before Allah? It is not fitting for anyone to prostrate to anyone else besides Allah. Had I ordered anyone to prostrate to something other than Allah, I would have ordered a woman to prostrate to her husband.”
The narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar regarding this:
Imām Aḥmad (1) said: Yazīd narrated to us; Mahdī ibn Maymūn narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Yaʿqūb, from al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar—(H)—and Bahz and ʿAffān also narrated to us; they said: Mahdī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Yaʿqūb narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿd—the freedman of al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī—on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once seated me behind him on his mount. He confided to me something that I shall never divulge to anyone. Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wished to relieve himself, the screen he preferred was either a small mound (2) or a cluster (3) of date-palms. One day he entered an orchard belonging to one of the Anṣār; a camel came up to him, groaning (4) and with tears flowing from its eyes (5). (In the version of Bahz and ʿAffān: When it saw the Messenger of Allah it yearned toward him and its eyes filled with tears.) The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stroked the ridge of its back (6) and the root of its tail (7) until it calmed down. He then said,
“Who is the owner of this camel?”
A young man from the Anṣār came and said, “It is mine, O Messenger of Allah.”
He said,
“Will you not fear Allah regarding this beast that Allah has placed in your charge? It has complained to me that you keep it hungry and exhaust it.” (8)
