and he told me: Simāk ibn Ḥarb—on the authority of Jābir ibn Samurah—who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I know a stone in Mecca that used to greet me before I was commissioned; I still recognize it today.’”
Muslim recorded this ḥadīth (1) through Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah (2), from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Bukayr, with the same chain. Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī (3) also transmitted it from Sulaymān ibn Muʿādh, from Simāk, with identical wording.
Another report:
Al-Tirmidhī (4) said: “ʿAbbād ibn Yaʿqūb al-Kūfī related to us; al-Walīd ibn Abī Thawr related to us, from al-Suddi, from ʿAbbād ibn Abī Yazīd, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:
‘I was with the Prophet ﷺ in Mecca. We went out to one of its outskirts, and not a single mountain or tree that met him failed to say, ‘Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.’’”
He (al-Tirmidhī) then remarked, “This ḥadīth is ḥasan gharīb. It has been reported by more than one transmitter from al-Walīd ibn Abī Thawr, from ʿAbbād ibn Abī Yazīd; among them is Furwah ibn Abī al-Maghrāʾ (5).”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym likewise narrated it through Ziyād ibn Khaythamah, from al-Suddi, from Abū ʿAmmārah al-Khaywānī (6), from ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:
“I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he would not pass by a tree or a stone without it greeting him.”
We have already mentioned, in the account of the beginning of his mission, that after he ﷺ had returned having received revelation, he would not pass by a stone, a tree, a clod of earth, or anything else without it saying to him, “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.”
We also referred, in the narratives of Badr and Ḥunayn, to his ﷺ casting a handful of dust and instructing his Companions to follow it with a decisive charge, whereupon victory, triumph, and divine support came swiftly thereafter. Concerning the Battle of Badr, Allah the Exalted says in Sūrat al-Anfāl: “You did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw.” (al-Anfāl 8:17)
As for the Battle of Ḥunayn, we cited the ḥadīths with their chains and exact wordings earlier, making repetition here unnecessary—praise and gratitude belong to Allah.

We have already noted in the account of the Conquest that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the Sacred Mosque and found the idols surrounding
