The ninth narration is from Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her:
Abū Nuʿaym relates—through the routes of Shurayk the judge, ʿAmr ibn Abī Qays, and Muʿallā ibn Hilāl; all three transmit from ʿAmmār al-Duhanī, from Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Umm Salamah—who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lean on a piece of wood when he preached. A chair—or pulpit—was then made for him, and when it was removed from him the wood bellowed like a bull, so loudly that the people in the mosque heard it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached it, and it became quiet.” (1) This is Shurayk’s wording.
In Muʿallā ibn Hilāl’s version it is stated that the wood was from a doum tree.
This isnād is good, though neither al-Bukhārī nor Muslim included it.
Imām Aḥmad and al-Nasāʾī (2) also transmitted—through the same chain of ʿAmmār al-Duhanī, from Abū Salamah, from Umm Salamah—that she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared,
“The legs of my pulpit are firmly set in Paradise.”
Al-Nasāʾī likewise narrated with this chain the saying:
“Between my house and my pulpit lies a garden from the gardens of Paradise.” (3)
Taken together, these various routes provide conclusive certainty for the masters of this discipline; the same result will be reached by anyone who studies them closely, reflects on them carefully, and is versed in the conditions of the transmitters. Allah is the One whose help is sought.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥasan informed me; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad ibn Idrīs al-Rāzī narrated to us. He said: My father—meaning Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī—reported that ʿAmr ibn Sawād said to me: al-Shāfiʿī told me,
“Allah has not bestowed upon any prophet what He bestowed upon Muḥammad ﷺ.”
I replied, “He granted Jesus the revival of the dead.”
He answered, “He granted Muḥammad the palm-trunk beside which he used to preach. When the pulpit was made for him, the trunk yearned until its sound was heard. That is greater than the former.” (4)
