Tamīm al-Dārī said, “Shall we not build a pulpit for you?”—and he recounted the whole narration.
Another chain from Ibn ʿUmar:
Imām Aḥmad (1) said: Ḥusayn narrated to us; Khallaf narrated to us, from Abū Janāb—whose name is Yaḥyā ibn Abī Ḥayyah—from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, who said:
“There was a palm-trunk in the mosque against which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would rest his back whenever Friday came, or whenever a matter arose about which he wished to address the people. They therefore said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall we not make something for you suited to the height at which you stand?’ He replied, ‘There is no harm in your doing so.’ So they made a pulpit of three steps for him. When he had taken his seat upon it, the trunk bellowed like a cow, grieving for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; so he embraced it and stroked it until it became quiet.” (2)
This report is unique to Aḥmad.
The seventh narration is from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī:
ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd al-Kashī (3) said: ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us, from al-Jarīrī, from Abū Naḍrah al-ʿAyīdī, who said that Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī related to me:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to deliver the Friday sermon leaning on a palm-trunk. The people said to him, ‘O Messenger of Allah, the number of people—meaning the Muslims—has grown, and they long to see you. If only you would take a pulpit to stand upon so that the people might behold you.’ He replied, ‘Yes. Who will make this pulpit for us?’
A man stood up and said, ‘I will.’ He asked, ‘Will you make it?’ He answered, ‘Yes,’ yet he did not say, ‘if Allah wills.’ He asked, ‘What is your name?’ He replied, ‘So-and-so.’ He said, ‘Sit down,’ and he sat.
He again asked, ‘Who will make this pulpit for us?’ Another man rose and said, ‘I will.’ He asked, ‘Will you make it?’ He answered, ‘Yes,’ still without adding, ‘if Allah wills.’ He asked, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘So-and-so.’ He said, ‘Sit down,’ and he sat.
He asked a third time, ‘Who will make this pulpit for us?’ A man stood up and said, ‘I will.’ He asked, ‘Will you make it?’ He replied, ‘Yes,’ and again he did not say, ‘if Allah wills.’ He asked, ‘What is your name?’ He replied, ‘So-and-so.’ He said, ‘Sit down,’ and he sat.
He then repeated, ‘Who will make this pulpit for us…’
