Imām Aḥmad alone relates this.
Another route from Jābir:
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: “Muḥammad ibn Maʿmar narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Kathīr narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Kathīr narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
‘Before the pulpit was made, the Prophet ﷺ would stand beside a date-palm trunk. When the pulpit was set up, the trunk began to moan until we could hear its sobbing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stroked it with his hand, and it fell silent.’
Al-Bazzār added, ‘We know of no one who transmits this from al-Zuhrī except Sulaymān ibn Kathīr.’
I say: This isnād is good; its narrators meet the criteria of al-Ṣaḥīḥ, yet none of the authors of the Six Books have recorded it.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym states in Dalāʾil (1): ‘ʿAbd al-Razzaq related it from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from a man whom he named, from Jābir.’
He then cited it (2) through the route of Abū ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAlī, from Sulaymān ibn Kathīr, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, from Jābir in identical form.
Next he said: ‘Abū Bakr ibn Khallād narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Kharrāz narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn al-Masāwir narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us, from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah, from Jābir:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to preach beside a trunk. When the pulpit was built, the trunk moaned, so he embraced it and it quieted, saying,
‘Had I not embraced it, it would have wailed until the Day of Resurrection.’” (3)
He likewise transmitted it (4) through Abū ʿAwana, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Jābir, and through Abū Isḥāq, from Kurayb, from Jābir, in similar terms.
Another route from Jābir:
Imām Aḥmad (5) said: “ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj informed us”—and Rūḥ added: “Ibn Jurayj narrated to us; he told me from Abū al-Zubayr, who heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say:
‘When the Prophet ﷺ delivered the sermon, he would lean against a date-palm trunk that formed one of the pillars of the mosque. When his pulpit was constructed and he ascended it …’
