to be belied.
“When Our command came, We saved Ṣāliḥ and those who believed with him, by a mercy from Us, and spared them the disgrace of that Day. Your Lord is indeed the All-Powerful, the All-Mighty. (66) But the Blast seized those who had done wrong, and by morning they lay lifeless in their homes (67) as though they had never dwelt there. Surely Thamūd denied their Lord; away with Thamūd!” (Hud 65–68)
In Sūrat al-Ḥijr He says:
“The people of al-Ḥijr also denied the messengers. (80) We had given them Our signs, yet they turned away from them. (81) They used to carve secure dwellings out of the mountains, (82) but the Blast overtook them at dawn, (83) and all that they had amassed was of no avail to them.” (al-Ḥijr 80–84)
In Sūrat al-Isrāʾ:
“Nothing prevented Us from sending the (miraculous) signs except that earlier communities rejected them. We gave Thamūd the she-camel as a visible sign, yet they wronged her; We do not send the signs except as a warning.” (al-Isrāʾ 59)
In Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ:
“Thamūd denied the messengers (141) when their brother Ṣāliḥ said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of Allah? (142) I am a trustworthy messenger to you, (143) so be conscious of Allah and obey me. (144) I ask of you no reward; my reward rests only with the Lord of all the worlds. (145) Will you be left secure amid what you have here— (146) gardens and springs, (147) fields and palm-trees with soft‐sheathed spathes— (148) while you skillfully carve houses out of the mountains? (149) So fear Allah and obey me, (150) and do not yield to those who are wasteful, (151) who spread corruption in the land and do no good.’ (152) They said, ‘You are but one of the bewitched; (153) you are only a human like us. Bring a sign if you are truthful.’ (154) He said, ‘Here is a she-camel; she has her turn to drink and you have yours on a designated day. (155) Do not touch her with any harm, or a grievous punishment will seize you.’ (156) Yet they hamstrung her, and then were filled with remorse. (157) So the punishment overtook them. Surely in that is a sign, even though most of them do not believe; (158) and indeed your Lord is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.” (al-Shuʿarāʾ 141–159)
In Sūrat al-Naml:
“We sent to Thamūd their brother Ṣāliḥ, (saying,) ‘Worship Allah,’ but they split into two disputing factions. (45) He said, ‘My people, why do you seek to hasten evil before good? Why do you not seek Allah’s forgiveness so that you may receive mercy?’ (46) They said, ‘We see you and those with you as a bad omen.’ He replied, ‘Your omen rests with Allah; rather, you are a people being tested.’ (47) In the city there were nine ringleaders who spread corruption in the land and set nothing right. (48) They said, swearing by Allah, ‘Let us attack him and his family by night; then we will say to his guardian, “We witnessed neither the destruction of his family nor his own; we are telling the truth.”’ (49) They plotted a plot, and We plotted a plot while they were unaware. (50) See, then, how the outcome of their plot was: We destroyed them and their entire people. (51) Those are their houses, fallen in ruin because of the wrong they committed. In that is a sign for people who understand. (52) Yet We saved those who believed and were mindful (of Allah).” (al-Naml 45–53)
In Sūrat Ḥā-Mīm al-Sajdah (Fussilat):
“As for Thamūd, We guided them, but they preferred blindness to guidance, so the thunderbolt of a humiliating punishment seized them for what they had earned; (17) yet We saved those who believed and were God-fearing.” (Fussilat 17–18)
In Sūrat al-Qamar:
“Thamūd rejected the warnings (23) and said, ‘Shall we follow a single human being from among ourselves? Then we would indeed be lost and deranged. (24) Has the Reminder been sent down to him out of all of us? No, he is an insolent liar.’ (25) They will know tomorrow who the insolent liar is. (26) We are sending the she-camel as a trial for them; watch them and be patient. (27) Tell them that the water is divided between them, each one having an appointed share. (28) But they called to their companion, who undertook (the deed) and hamstrung her. (29) How severe were My punishment and My warnings! (30) We sent upon them a single Blast, and they became like dry, crumbling stalks of a pen-fold builder. (31) We have indeed made the Qur’an easy to remember, so is there anyone who will take heed?” (al-Qamar 23–32)
And He says:
“Thamūd denied (their Lord) in their rebellion, (11) when the most wretched of them rose up. (12) The Messenger of Allah said to them, ‘(Beware of) Allah’s she-camel and her right to drink.’ (13) Yet they rejected him and hamstrung her, so their Lord destroyed them for their sin and leveled them, (14) and He does not fear the consequences thereof.” (al-Shams 11–15)
Allah frequently pairs the mention of ʿĀd and Thamūd together in His Book, as in Sūrat al-Tawbah, Ibrāhīm, al-Furqān, Ṣād, Qāf, al-Najm, and al-Fajr.
It is said that the People of the Book know nothing of these two nations and that they are nowhere mentioned in their Torah; however—
