When the pulpit was constructed for him and he ascended it, we heard that trunk give off a sound like the cry of pregnant she-camels, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, placed his hand upon it, and it fell silent. (1)
Al-Bukhārī alone relates this chain.
Another route from Jābir:
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: “Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us; Abū al-Masāwir narrated to us; Abū ʿAwana narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ—who is Dhakwān—from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, and from Abū Isḥāq, from Kurayb, from Jābir, who said:
‘There was a wooden post in the mosque beside which the Prophet ﷺ would preach. They said, “Shall we not fashion something like a chair for you to stand on?” So they did, and the post wailed like a she-camel whose calf has been taken from her. The Prophet ﷺ came to it, embraced it, placed his hand upon it, and it became still.’ (2)
Abū Bakr al-Bazzār added: ‘I think we also transmitted it from Abū ʿAwana, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Jābir; and from Abū Isḥāq, from Kurayb, from Jābir, with the same account that Abū al-Masāwir related from Abū ʿAwana.’
He continued: ‘Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān ibn Karamah narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Karib (3), from Jābir, from the Prophet ﷺ, in similar words.
‘The correct name is Saʿīd ibn Abī Karib (3); “Kurayb” is a mistake. We know of no one who narrates from Saʿīd ibn Abī Karib (3) except Abū Isḥāq.’
I say: They have not produced it through any other chain, and it is sound.
Another route from Jābir:
Imām Aḥmad (4) said: ‘Yahyā ibn Ādam narrated to us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Karib, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ used to deliver the sermon beside a wooden post. When a pulpit was made for him, the post groaned like a she-camel; he went to it, placed his hand upon it, and it fell silent.”’
