Another route from Anas:
Abū Nuʿaym said: “Abū Bakr ibn Khallād narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Usāmah narrated to us; Yaʿlā ibn ʿAbbād narrated to us; al-Ḥakam narrated to us, from Anas, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give the sermon while leaning against a palm-trunk. The trunk yearned, so he embraced it and said,
“If I had not embraced it, it would have continued to yearn until the Day of Resurrection.”’ (1)
The third ḥadīth—on the authority of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, may Allah be pleased with him:
Imām Aḥmad (2) said: “Wakīʿ narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ayman narrated to us, from his father, from Jābir, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to preach beside a date-palm trunk. A woman from the Anṣār—she owned a young slave who was a carpenter—said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have a servant who is a carpenter; shall I order him to make a pulpit for you so that you may preach upon it?” He replied, “Yes.”
‘So a pulpit was made for him. When Friday came and he preached from it, the trunk upon which he had previously stood groaned like a child. The Prophet ﷺ said,
“This has wept for what it has lost of the remembrance.”’
Such is Aḥmad’s wording.
Al-Bukhārī (3) likewise said: “Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ayman narrated to us; I heard my father narrate from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would stand on Fridays next to a tree—or a date-palm. A woman from the Anṣār—or a man—said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall we not make a pulpit for you?’ He replied, ‘If you wish.’
“So they made a pulpit for him. When Friday came and he was led toward it, the palm cried out with the cry of a small child. The Prophet ﷺ then descended and clasped it to himself, and it moaned like a child being soothed. He said,
‘It was weeping for what it used to hear of the remembrance in its presence.’”
Al-Bukhārī records this ḥadīth in several places in his Ṣaḥīḥ through the chain of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ayman, from his father, from Ayman al-Ḥabashī al-Makkī, the freedman of Ibn Abī ʿAmrah al-Makhzūmī, from Jābir, with this wording.
Another route from Jābir:
Al-Bukhārī said: “Ismāʿīl narrated to us; my brother narrated to me, from Sulaymān ibn Bilāl, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, who said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Anas ibn Mālik informed me that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī say:
‘The mosque was roofed with palm-trunk columns, and whenever the Prophet ﷺ delivered the sermon he would stand beside one of them. When—’”}
