He led us up to one of his rooms, drew a key from the belt at his waist, and unlocked the door.
Dukayn reports: Inside the room lay a heap of dates that looked like a reclining camel calf. He said, “Help yourselves.” Each man among us took whatever he wanted, after which he turned around—and I was among the last—yet it seemed as though not a single date had been taken from the pile.(1)
Aḥmad also transmitted this report through Muḥammad and Yaʿlā, the two sons of ʿUbayd,(2) from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from Dukayn with the same wording.(3)
Abū Dāwūd likewise recorded it(4) through ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Muṭarrif al-Rawwāsī, from ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, from Ismāʿīl.
Another ḥadith:
ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Ḥashraj ibn Nubātah narrated to us; Abū Naḍrah narrated to us; Abū Rajāʾ narrated to me:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and entered an orchard belonging to one of the Anṣār, where he found the owner struggling to water it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “What will you give me if I water your orchard for you?” The man replied, “I wear myself out trying to water it, yet I cannot manage.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Will you give me one hundred dates of my choosing from your dates?” He answered, “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then took the bucket, and before long he had completely irrigated the orchard, so much so that the man exclaimed, “My orchard is flooding!” The Prophet ﷺ chose one hundred dates from the harvest, ate from them with his Companions until they were satisfied, and then returned to the owner one hundred dates—the very amount he had taken.(5)
This is an uncommon (gharīb) report. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir cites it in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah at the beginning of his history, with his chain through ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Baghawī, exactly as we have related it here.
Earlier, in the account of Salmān the Persian’s conversion, we mentioned the three hundred date-palms that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ planted with his own blessed hands for Salmān: not one of them died; all bore fruit. We also recounted how he multiplied a piece of gold by rolling it on his noble tongue until Salmān had paid every installment of his emancipation contract and was freed—may Allah be pleased with him.
Chapter: The Submission of Trees to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
We have already quoted the ḥadith transmitted by Muslim(6), through Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl, from Abū Ḥarza Yaʿqūb ibn Mujāhid, from ʿUbādah ibn al-Walīd ibn ʿUbādah, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
