was brought by Zaynab, the Jewish woman. When the Prophet ﷺ took a bite of the foreleg, the foreleg itself informed him that it had been poisoned,(1) as we explained in detail in the section on the Expedition of Khaybar.
Another chain of transmission:
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā said: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Zayd ibn al-Ḥubbāb narrated to us; Fāʾid, the freedman of ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, narrated to me—from Abū Rāfiʿ, who said:
I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of the Trench with a sheep in a basket. He said, “Abū Rāfiʿ, hand me the foreleg,” so I handed it to him. He then said, “Abū Rāfiʿ, hand me the foreleg,” so I handed it to him. Then he said, “Abū Rāfiʿ, hand me the foreleg.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, a sheep has only two forelegs!” He replied, “Had you remained silent for a moment, you would have continued to hand it to me each time I asked.”
There is a break in the chain on this route.
Abū Yaʿlā also said: Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Maqdamī narrated to us; Fuḍayl ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; Fāʾid, the freedman of ʿUbayd Allāh, narrated to us—he said: ʿUbayd Allāh related to me that his grandmother Salmā informed him that the Prophet ﷺ sent a roasted sheep to Abū Rāfiʿ on the Day of the Trench, as far as I know. Abū Rāfiʿ roasted it—there was no bread with it—and then set off with it. He met the Prophet ﷺ as the latter was returning from the trench, and the Prophet said, “Abū Rāfiʿ, set down what you are carrying.” So he put it down. Then the Prophet said, “Abū Rāfiʿ, hand me the foreleg,” and I handed it to him. He then said, “Abū Rāfiʿ, hand me the foreleg,” and I handed it to him. Then he said, “Abū Rāfiʿ, hand me the foreleg.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, does a sheep have more than two forelegs?” He replied, “Had you kept silent you would have handed me whatever I asked for.”
It has likewise been narrated through Abū Hurayrah.
Imām Aḥmad said: al-Ḍaḥḥāk narrated to us; Ibn ʿAjlān narrated to us, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah: A sheep was cooked, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Give me the foreleg,” so I handed it to him. He then said, “Give me the foreleg,” and I handed it to him. Then he said, “Give me the foreleg.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, the sheep has only two forelegs.” He said, “If you had looked for it you would have found it.”(2)
Another ḥadith:
Imām Aḥmad said: Wakiʿ narrated to us (from Ismāʿīl, from Qays)(3), from Dukayn ibn Saʿīd al-Khathʿamī, who said: We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—there were four hundred and forty of us—asking him for food. The Prophet ﷺ said to ʿUmar, “Get up and give it to them.” ʿUmar replied, “O Messenger of Allah, I possess only what will sustain me and my children.” Wakiʿ explained that the word qayẓ, in the speech of the Arabs, refers to four months. The Prophet repeated, “Get up and give it to them.” ʿUmar said, “O Messenger of Allah, I hear and obey.” So ʿUmar stood, and we rose with him, and he ascended
