to a Jew for thirty sâʿ of barley, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handed it over to him. Naufal said, “We kept eating from it for half a year; then we measured it and found it just as we had first put it in.” He added, “I told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this, and he said, ‘Had you not measured it, you would have eaten from it for as long as you lived.’”

Al-Ḥâfiẓ al-Bayhaqî said in Dalâʾil al-Nubuwwah: ʿAbdullâh ibn Yûsuf al-Iṣfahânî informed us; Abû Saʿîd ibn al-Aʿrâbî informed us; ʿAbbâs ibn Muḥammad al-Dûrî narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdullâh ibn Yûnus narrated to us; Abû Bakr ibn ʿAyyâsh narrated to us, from Hishâm—meaning Ibn Ḥassân—from Ibn Sîrîn, from Abû Hurayrah who said:
A man returned to his family and saw the hardship they were suffering, so he went out into the open country. His wife prayed, “O Allah, provide us with dough to knead and bread to bake.” Suddenly the kneading bowl was full of risen dough, the millstone was grinding, and the oven was packed with bread and roasted meat. When her husband came back he asked, “Do you have anything to eat?” She answered, “Yes—provision from Allah.” He lifted the millstone and swept up what was around it. Later he mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Had you left it alone, it would have kept on turning until the Day of Resurrection.”
Al-Bayhaqî also reported—with a different chain—through ʿAlî ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdân, Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd aṣ-Ṣaffâr, Abû Ismâʿîl al-Tirmidhî, Abû Ṣâliḥ ʿAbdullâh ibn Ṣâliḥ, al-Layth ibn Saʿd, from Saʿîd ibn Abî Saʿîd al-Maqburî, from Abû Hurayrah:
A man of the Anṣâr was in need and left home while his family had nothing. His wife said, “What if I set the millstone turning and put some palm-fronds in the oven, so that our neighbors hear the mill and see the smoke and think we have food, even though we are destitute?” She kindled the oven and sat turning the millstone. Her husband arrived and heard the sound; she rose to open the door. He asked, “What were you grinding?” She told him what she had done. They entered and, behold, the millstone was turning on its own, pouring out flour until every vessel in the house was filled. She then went to the oven and found it crammed with loaves of bread. The man went and related this to the Prophet ﷺ, who asked, “What became of the millstone?” He replied, “I lifted it and shook it clean.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Had you left it, it would have continued for you throughout my lifetime”—or he said, “throughout your lifetime.”
This report is unusual both in its chain of transmission and in its wording.
