Another chain through ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr al-ʿAqadī
Imām Aḥmad said (1): “Abū ʿĀmir narrated to us; Ismāʿīl—meaning Ibn Muslim—narrated to us, from Abū al-Mutawakkil, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a quantity of dates. I placed them in a basket and we hung it from the ceiling of the house. We kept eating from it until, in the end, the people of Syria carried it off when they raided Madinah.’”
This isnād is unique to Aḥmad.
A report on the same subject from al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah was cited by the ḥadīth-master Ibn ʿAsākir in his biographical entry, through the route of Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Wāqidī. He said:
“ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Sabrā narrated to me, from Mūsā ibn Saʿd, from al-ʿIrbāḍ, who said:
‘I used to keep to the door of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in both residence and travel. One night while we were at Tabūk, we stepped away to attend a need; when we came back, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already taken supper with those who were with him. He asked, “Where have you been all evening?” I told him. Then Juʿāl ibn Surāqah and ʿAbdullāh ibn Mughafal al-Muzanī arrived, so we were three—and all of us were hungry.
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the house of Umm Salamah, looked for something for us to eat, and found nothing. He called, “Bilāl, is there anything?” Bilāl shook the leather pouches, and seven dates were gathered. He placed them in a dish, laid his hand upon them, and pronounced the Name of Allah, then said, “Eat in the name of Allah.”
‘We ate. I counted fifty-four dates, keeping the pits in my other hand. My two companions did the same, and each of them ate fifty dates. When we lifted our hands, the seven dates were still lying there just as they had been. He said, “Bilāl, put them in your pouch.”
‘The next morning he set them in the dish again and said, “Eat in the name of Allah.” We ate until we were full—we were ten men that day—then raised our hands, and they were still seven.
‘He said, “Were it not that I feel shy before my Lord, Exalted is He, I would continue eating from these dates until the last of us reached Madinah.”
‘When he returned to Madinah, a young boy from the city came by. He handed the seven dates to the boy, who went off chewing them.’ (2)”
Another ḥadīth
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both recorded—through Abū Usāmah, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father—from ʿĀʾishah, who said to him:
