Another chain of transmission:
Imām Aḥmad said: “Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb informed us; ʿAmr—meaning Ibn al-Ḥārith—reported that Abū al-Naḍr told him, on the authority of Sulaymān ibn Yasār, from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
She said, “I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laugh in such a full, uninhibited way that I could see the back of his throat; he would only smile. Whenever he saw a cloud or a wind, this was apparent on his face.
“So I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, when people see a cloud they rejoice, hoping it carries rain, yet when you see it a look of displeasure shows on your face. Why is that?’
“He replied, ‘ʿĀʾishah, what assurance do I have that it does not contain punishment? A people were punished by a wind, and when another people saw the punishment they said, “This is a cloud that will bring us rain.”’” (46:24)
This ḥadīth is virtually explicit that the two accounts are distinct, as we noted earlier. Accordingly, the episode in Sūrat al-Aḥqāf concerns the second ʿĀd, whereas the rest of the Qur’ānic passages refer to the first ʿĀd. Allah knows best.
Muslim transmits this report from Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf, and al-Bukhārī and Abū Dāwūd record it through Ibn Wahb.
We have already mentioned the pilgrimage of Hūd (peace be upon him) when discussing the pilgrimage of Noah (peace be upon him).
It is related from the Commander of the Believers ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib that he described Hūd’s grave as being in Yemen. Others maintain that it is in Damascus, and that within its Great Mosque there is a spot in the southern wall which some people claim to be Hūd’s grave. Allah knows best.
