Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Al-Nasā’ī likewise transmitted it, through ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, with a chain of transmission similar to the one mentioned earlier. (1)

Another report concerning this incident

The ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said:

Ahmad ibn al-Muʿallā al-Adamī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Salamah narrated to us; Abū Bakr—whom I think was a descendant of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—told me, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Rabīʿah, who said that he heard Abū Khunays al-Ghifārī say:

“We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Tihāmah expedition. When we reached ʿUsfān, his Companions came to him and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, hunger has exhausted us; grant us permission to slaughter our riding-camels so that we may eat them.’

He replied, ‘Yes.’

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb was informed, so he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Prophet of Allah, what have you done? You have ordered the people to slaughter their mounts—what will they ride upon?’

He said, ‘What do you think, O son of al-Khaṭṭāb?’

ʿUmar answered, ‘I think you should command them to bring whatever remains of their provisions, gather it on a cloth, and then supplicate for them.’ He therefore ordered them to do so; they gathered what was left of their food on a cloth and he supplicated for them. He then said, ‘Bring your containers,’ and every person filled his vessel.

After that he gave the order to break camp. When they had moved on, rain fell upon them; he halted, and they halted with him, drinking from the water that came from the sky.

Then three men approached. Two of them sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while the third turned away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

‘Shall I tell you about these three men? One felt shy before Allah, so Allah was shy toward him. Another came in repentance, so Allah accepted his repentance. As for the third, he turned away, so Allah turned away from him.’

Al-Bazzār added: We do not know of Abū Khunays narrating anything except this ḥadīth with this chain of transmission.

Al-Bayhaqī also recorded it (2) from Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Bishrān, from Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī: Isḥāq ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ḥarbī (3) narrated to us; Abū Rajāʾ informed us; Saʿīd ibn Salamah narrated to us; Abū Bakr ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb narrated to me, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Rabīʿah, who said that he heard Abū Khunays al-Ghifārī—then he mentioned the same story.

Another narration from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb regarding this incident

The ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā said:

Abū Hishām—Muḥammad ibn Zayd al-Rifāʿī—narrated to us; Ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us; Yazīd

(1) In Sunan al-Kubra (no. 8793) and in ‘Amal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah (no. 1140); the isnad (chain of transmission) of the hadith is sound. (2) Al-Bayhaqi records it in Dalā’il al-Nubuwwah (vol. 6, p. 122), and al-Ḥafiz Ibn Hajar transmits it in al-Isābah (vol. 4, p. 52), commenting that “the chain is sound.” We ourselves heard it with an elevated (mursal) chain in the second of al-Mahamili’s al-Amālī, via the two Isfahani narrators. It is also corroborated in both Sahih collections, and another supporting report appears in al-Hakim’s Musnad from Anas. (3) In both the manuscript and printed editions “al-Kharzi” is a corruption. The correct reading, as we have established, is al-Harbi, a Ḥanbali from the people of al-Harbīyah in Baghdad, as recorded in Tabaqāt al-Ḥanābila (vol. 1, p. 112), Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ (vol. 13, p. 410), al-Wāfī (vol. 8, p. 409), and elsewhere.
