A sheep was slaughtered and prepared, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered that its liver be roasted. He said, “By Allah, there was not one of the one hundred and thirty present except that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cut for him a slice from the liver. If the man was present he handed it to him, and if he was absent he set it aside for him.” He then placed the meat in two large bowls. All of us ate from them until we were fully satisfied, yet both bowls still contained more. What remained was loaded on the camel—or so he said.
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim have both recorded this ḥadīth as well [1] through the narration of Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān.
[Another report on the multiplication of food while on campaign]
Imām Aḥmad related: Fazārah ibn ʿUmar told us; Fulayḥ narrated to us, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out on an expedition. During it the Muslims became destitute and were in need of food. They asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to slaughter their camels, and he granted it. News of this reached ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—who came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, will they slaughter the very camels that carry them and convey them to the enemy? Summon the remnants [2] of their provisions and invoke Allah’s blessing upon them.” He replied, “Yes.”
So he called for what little food remained with the people; they brought it, he gathered it all together, and then he invoked Allah’s blessing upon it. He next told them to bring their containers; he filled every container, and a large surplus still remained. At that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed:
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. Whoever meets Allah with these two testimonies, harboring no doubt, will enter Paradise.” [3]
Jaʿfar al-Firyābī transmitted the same report from Abū Muṣʿab al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from his father, from Suhayl, with identical wording. Muslim and al-Nasāʾī likewise recorded it [5] through the chain of Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Naḍr, from his father, from ʿUbayd Allāh al-Ashjaʿī, from Mālik ibn Mighwal, from Ṭalḥah ibn Muṣarrif, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī [6] said: Zuhayr narrated to us; Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from—
