ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kaʿb, from his father Kaʿb ibn Mālik, said:
Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who perceived hunger in his face. Jābir related that he returned home, slaughtered a household ewe they possessed, cooked it, crumbled bread beneath it in a large wooden bowl, and carried it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet then told him to invite the Anṣār. Jābir ushered them in, group after group; they all ate, yet the dish remained just as full. Throughout, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed them to eat but not to break any bone. When they had finished, he gathered the bones in the center of the bowl, placed his hand over them, and uttered words I could not hear, though I saw his lips move. Suddenly the sheep stood up, shaking its ears. He said,
“Take your sheep, O Jābir; may Allah bless it for you.”
I took it and departed, and it kept tugging at its ear as I led it until I reached the house. My wife asked, “What is this, Jābir?” I replied, “By Allah, this is the very sheep we slaughtered for the Messenger of Allah; he prayed to Allah and He restored it to life for us.” She exclaimed, “I testify that he is the Messenger of Allah, I testify that he is the Messenger of Allah, I testify that he is the Messenger of Allah!”
[Another report from Anas conveying the same meaning]
Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī and al-Bāghandī said: “Shaybān narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā al-Baṣrī—known as ‘the man of the food’—narrated to us; Thābit al-Bunnānī narrated to us.”
I said to Anas ibn Mālik, “O Anas, tell me the most wondrous thing you witnessed.” He replied, “Yes, O Thābit. I served the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for ten years, and he never reproached me for any shortcoming. When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ married Zaynab bint Jaḥsh, my mother said to me, ‘O Anas, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a bridegroom this morning and I do not know whether he has any food. Bring that small skin of clarified butter.’ I brought her the skin and some dates, and she made ḥays from them. She then said, ‘O Anas, take this to the Prophet of Allah and to his wife.’
“When I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a stone bowl containing that ḥays, he said:
‘Set it in a corner of the house, and call for me Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿAlī, and ʿUthmān, along with a number of my Companions; then invite the people of the mosque and anyone you meet on the road.’
“I was astonished at how little food there was compared with the number of people he ordered me to invite, yet I was reluctant to disobey him. I continued inviting until the house and the adjoining room were filled.
“He then said, ‘O Anas, do you see anyone else?’ I answered, ‘No, Messenger of Allah.’
“He said, ‘Bring that bowl.’ I brought it and placed it before him. He dipped three fingers into it, and the bowl began to swell
