Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Hāzim narrated—from his uncle Jarīr ibn Zayd (1)—from ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah, from Anas ibn Mālik, who reported something similar to what has just been mentioned.

Another chain from Anas

Imām Aḥmad said:

Yūnus ibn Muḥammad related to us; Ḥammād—meaning Ibn Zayd—related to us, from Hishām, from Muḥammad—meaning Ibn Sīrīn—from Anas.
Ḥammād added, “Al-Jaʿd has also mentioned it (2).”

He said: “Umm Sulaym took half a mudd of barley, ground it, then took a small skin flask that contained a little clarified butter and from it prepared a khaṭīfah (3). She then sent me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

“When I came to him he was sitting with his Companions, so I said, ‘Umm Sulaym has sent me to invite you.’
He replied, ‘I and those who are with me.’
He then set off, accompanied by those who were with him.

“I went ahead and said to Abū Ṭalḥah, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has arrived with his Companions.’ Abū Ṭalḥah went out and walked alongside the Prophet ﷺ, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is only a khaṭīfah that Umm Sulaym has prepared from half a mudd of barley.’

“The Prophet entered, and the dish was brought to him. He placed his hand upon it and then said, ‘Let ten enter.’ Ten entered and ate until they were satisfied; then another ten entered and ate, and then another ten, until forty men had eaten from it, every one of them full.

“The food remained just as it was, and we too ate from it (4).”

Al-Bukhārī (5) also transmitted this ḥadīth in the Book of Foods through al-Ḍalit ibn Muḥammad, from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, from al-Jaʿd Abū ʿUthmān, from Anas; through Hishām, from Muḥammad (6), from Anas; and through Sinān ibn Rabīʿah Abū Rabīʿah (7), from Anas, who said: “Umm Sulaym took a mudd of coarsely ground barley (8), made from it a khaṭīfah, took a small skin flask that contained some clarified butter and squeezed it, then sent me to the Messenger of Allah while he was with his Companions …” the ḥadīth in full.

Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī likewise recorded it, saying: ʿAmr ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk related to us; my father related to us; I heard Ashʿath al-Ḥaddānī (9) say:

(1) In both the original manuscript and the printed edition the name appears as Jarir ibn Yazid. The correction is taken from Sahih Muslim. (2) I have retained the passage enclosed between the two parenthetical markers from the Musnad. It means that al-Ja‘d Abū Uthmān also transmitted the hadith from Anas, as found in al-Bukhari’s recension. (3) “Khatīfah”: a fine flour sprinkled with milk and then cooked. (4) It is narrated by Imam Aḥmad in his Musnad (3/147) and has been classified as authentic (ṣaḥīḥ). (5) It is recorded in al-Bukhari’s Ṣaḥīḥ as hadith no. 5450 under “Foods,” and also appears as no. 422 under “Prayer,” and no. 3634 under “Virtues.” (6) “Muhammad” here refers to Ibn Sīrīn. (7) Concerning Sinān Abū Rabī‘ah: al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar comments, “Sinān ibn Rabī‘ah, known as Abū Rabī‘ah, shares his kunyah with his father’s name” (Fath al-Bārī, 9/574). (8) “Jashshatahu”: he made it jashīsh, and jashīsh denotes a coarsely ground flour. (9) In the printed edition it reads “al-Ḥarānī,” which is clearly erroneous. The correct name is Ash‘ath ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Jābir al-Ḥadānī, one of the transmitters listed in al-Tahdhib.
