They also watered their beasts and mounts, and filled every water-skin, leather bottle, and provision-bag they had. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions advanced toward the idolaters. Allah sent a wind that beat against the idolaters’ faces, bestowed His help, and allowed the Muslims to attack them from the rear. They slew a great number of them (1), took many captives, and carried off abundant spoils. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, and the people were all safe and sound (2).
A report with similar wording from Jābir has been cited above, and it appears in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (3).
We have already mentioned, under the Expedition of Tabūk, what Muslim related through Mālik, from Abū’z-Zubayr, from Abū’ṭ-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh ibn Jabal, concerning the combining of prayers in that expedition, up to his words:
He—meaning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—said: “Tomorrow, if Allah wills, you will come to the spring of Tabūk, and you will not reach it until the sun is high in the forenoon. Whoever reaches it must not touch any of its water until I arrive.” Muʿādh said: “We came to it and two men had preceded us, while the spring was no larger than a sandal-strap and was only trickling a little water. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, ‘Have you taken any of its water?’ They replied, ‘Yes.’ He rebuked them and said to them whatever Allah willed him to say. Then, with their hands (4), they scooped out a little at a time until some water collected in a vessel. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ washed his face and hands in it, then poured it back into the spring, whereupon it gushed forth with abundant water (5). The people drew water, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: ‘O Muʿādh, it is likely that, should you live long enough, you will see this place filled with gardens’ (6).
We also mentioned in the chapter on Delegations, through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ziyād ibn Anʿum, from Ziyād ibn al-Ḥārith al-Ṣudāʾī, the story of his delegation. In the lengthy ḥadīth he relates:
“We said, ‘Messenger of Allah, we have a well whose water suffices us and gathers us together in winter, but when summer comes its water diminishes and we disperse to other nearby watering places. We have embraced Islam while all those around us are enemies. Pray to Allah for our well so that its water will be sufficient for us and we may remain together.’ So he asked for seven pebbles, rubbed them in his hand, and supplicated over them. He then said: ‘Take these pebbles; when you reach the well, cast them in one by one, mentioning Allah ﷻ.’
Al-Ṣudāʾī continued: ‘We did exactly as he instructed us, and thereafter we were never again able to see its bottom—that is, the bottom of the well.’
