Hammād ibn Salamah said:
Humayd al-Ṭawīl narrated to us, from Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Muzanī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rabāḥ, from Abū Qatādah, from the Prophet ﷺ, with the same wording, and he added:
“Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ halted to rest while there was still night, he would lie on his right side; and whenever he halted at daybreak, he would place his head on the palm of his right hand and raise his forearm.”
Muslim also related it, through Shaybān ibn Farrūkh, from Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah, from Thābit, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rabāḥ, from Abū Qatādah al-Ḥārith ibn Ribʿī al-Anṣārī, in full. He likewise recorded it from Hammād ibn Salamah with the same chain.
Another ḥadīth from Anas resembles this:
Al-Bayhaqī reports—by way of the ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī—who said: Shaybān narrated to us, Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān al-Ḍabʿī narrated to us, Anas ibn Mālik narrated to us: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched an army against the polytheists, Abu Bakr being among them, and said:
“Press on with your march, for there is a water source between you and the polytheists. If the polytheists reach that water first, it will trouble the people, and you and your mounts will suffer grievous thirst.”
He himself remained behind with eight men—I was the ninth—and said to his companions:
“Shall we bivouac for a short while and then catch up with the people?”
They replied, “Yes, Messenger of Allah.” So they camped, and nothing woke them but the heat of the sun. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ awoke, and so did his companions. He said:
“Go on ahead and tend to your needs.”
They did so and then returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who asked:
“Does anyone have any water?”
One man replied, “Messenger of Allah, I have a small water-skin with a little water in it.”
He said, “Bring it.” When it was brought, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ passed his hands over it and invoked blessing upon it. Then he said to his companions:
“Come and perform your ablution.”
He poured water over them until they had all performed ablution. One of them gave the call to prayer and the iqāmah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led them in prayer. He then said to the owner of the water-skin:
“Keep your water-skin safe, for it will have its own story.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode on ahead of the people and said to his companions:
“What do you think the people have done?”
They said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”
He said, “Among them are Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, and they will guide the people aright.”
The army reached the water, but the polytheists had arrived before them; this weighed heavily upon the Muslims, and they and their mounts suffered severe thirst. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Where is the owner of the water-skin?”
They answered, “Here he is, Messenger of Allah.”
He said, “Bring me your water-skin.” It was brought to him, and there was still a little water in it. He said:
“Come and drink.”
He kept pouring out for them until everyone had drunk and their animals had been watered.
