We journeyed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we halted in a broad valley (1). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went off to relieve himself, and I followed him with a small water-skin. He looked around but found nothing with which to screen himself. There, on the valley’s edge (2), were two trees. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to one of them, grasped a branch, and said,
“Submit to me, by Allah’s permission.”
It bent toward him like a bridled camel (3) that yields to its driver. He then reached the second tree, took hold of one of its branches, and said,
“Submit to me, by Allah’s permission.”
It bent likewise. When he reached the midpoint between them he brought them together—meaning he drew them close—and said,
“Join together over me, by Allah’s permission.”
So they joined.
Jābir said: I withdrew quickly (4), fearing that the Messenger of Allah might notice how near I was and move farther away. I sat, speaking to myself, and then glanced up to find the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returning, while the two trees had separated and were each standing on its trunk. I saw him pause, then nod his head like this—right and left—before coming toward me. When he reached me he said,
“O Jābir, did you see where I stood?”
I replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said,
“Go to the two trees and cut a branch from each. Bring them back, and when you stand at my spot cast one branch to your right and the other to your left.”
Jābir continued: I rose, took a stone, broke it, and sharpened it (5) so that it cut smoothly (6). I went to the two trees, cut a branch from each, returned to the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had stood, and cast one branch on my right and the other on my left. Then I caught up with him and said, “I have done it, O Messenger of Allah.” I asked, “Why was that (7)?” He replied,
“I passed by two graves whose occupants are being punished, and I wished—through my intercession—that their punishment be eased (8) for as long as these branches remain fresh.”
He added: We then reached the camp, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “O Jābir, call out for ablution water!” (9) So I cried, “Water for wudūʾ! Water for wudūʾ! Water for wudūʾ!” I then said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have not found a single drop among the company.”
There was a man from the Anṣār who used to keep water cool for the Messenger of Allah in small water-skins (10) that he carried on a pack-frame (11) made of palm ribs. The Prophet said to me, “Go to so-and-so the Anṣārī—"
