All praise is Yours, and praise is due as well to everyone who gives thanks—by the Prophet’s noble face we were granted rain.
He called upon God, his Creator, with a single supplication, lifting his gaze up toward Him.
No sooner had he lowered the edge of his cloak than the clouds hastened on and we saw pearly drops pour down—
a torrent for which the thirsty gazelles long, spreading over every stretch of land; through it God relieved the very heart of Muḍar.
He turned out to be exactly as his uncle Abū Ṭālib had described—fair-complected and possessed of radiant virtues.
Through him God waters the earth with the showers of the clouds; what we now witness with our own eyes matches what the reports had told.
Whoever thanks God will receive yet more, and whoever is ungrateful will meet with hardship.
He (the narrator) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remarked, “If there is a poet who excels, then you have certainly excelled.”
This version, however, is unusual and does not resemble the sound, mutawātir reports we cited earlier from Anas. If it has indeed been preserved in this form, then it relates to a different incident from the one previously mentioned; Allah knows best.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: Abū Bakr ibn al-Ḥārith al-Aṣbahānī informed us; Abū Muḥammad ibn Ḥayyān related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṣʿab related to us; ʿAbd al-Jabbār related to us; Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah related to us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Dhʿib al-Madanī related to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Ḥāṭib al-Jumaḥī, from Abū Wajrah Yazīd ibn ʿUbayd al-Sulamī, who said:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the Expedition of Tabūk, a delegation of Banū Fizārah—about a dozen men—came to him. Among them were Khārijah ibn Ḥuṣayn and al-Ḥurr ibn Qays—the youngest of them—nephew of ʿUyaynāh ibn Ḥiṣn. They lodged in the house of Ramla bint al-Ḥārith of the Anṣār, having arrived on weak, emaciated camels, for they were enduring severe drought. They approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ already professing Islam.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them about their homeland. They replied, “O Messenger of Allah, our land has been struck by drought, our settlements have become barren, our families are destitute, and our livestock have perished. Pray to your Lord to send us rain; intercede for us with your Lord, and let your Lord intercede with you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded, “Glory be to Allah! Woe to you! I supplicate to my Lord—so with whom would our Lord intercede? There is no god but Allah. His Footstool encompasses the heavens and the earth, and it creaks beneath the weight of His majesty and grandeur just as a new saddle creaks.”
He added, “Allah laughs at your compassion, your distress, and how near your relief is.”
