Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both transmit the incident (1) through the chain of Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah.
They likewise relate it (2) through al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from Abū Maʿmar ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sukhbarah, from Ibn Masʿūd, with the same purport.
Al-Bukhārī adds (3): Abū al-Ḍaḥḥā reported from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh, saying, “It split in Mecca.”
This report, cited by al-Bukhārī in suspended form, is given with a continuous chain by Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī in his Musnad (4). He said:
“Abū ʿAwanah narrated to us, from al-Mughīrah, from Abū al-Ḍaḥḥā, from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
‘The moon split during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Quraysh exclaimed, “This is the magic of the son of Abū Kabshah!” They then said, “Let us wait for the travelers; Muḥammad cannot bewitch all people.” When the travelers arrived, they confirmed the event.’”
Al-Bayhaqī also records it (5) through al-Ḥākim, al-Aṣamm, ʿAbbās al-Dūrī (6), Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān, Hushaym (7), al-Mughīrah, Abū al-Ḍaḥḥā, and Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
“The moon split in Mecca until it became two halves. The disbelievers of Quraysh—the people of Mecca—said, ‘This is sorcery with which the son of Abū Kabshah has bewitched you. Consult the travelers: if they saw what you saw, then he has spoken the truth; if not, it is only a spell cast over you.’ The travelers, who had come from every direction, were questioned and replied, ‘We saw it.’”
Ibn Jarīr relates it as well (8) through al-Mughīrah, adding: “Then Allah revealed: ‘The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split’ (Q 54:1).”
