Through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Muḥammad ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from his father, who said:
“During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the moon split into two parts—one part above this mountain and the other above that mountain. The people exclaimed, ‘Muhammad has cast a spell over us!’ Then they said, ‘If he has bewitched us, he will not be able to bewitch everyone.’”
This isnad is related solely by Aḥmad (1).
Ibn Jarīr and al-Bayhaqī (2) also transmit the report—through several chains—from Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān with the same content.
Narration of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān
Abū Jaʿfar Ibn Jarīr (3) said: Yaʿqūb narrated to me; Ibn ʿUlayyah narrated to us; ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib informed us, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, who said:
“We settled in al-Madāʾin, about a farsakh from the city. When Friday arrived my father attended the prayer and I went with him. Hudhayfah delivered the sermon and said:
‘Allah, Exalted is He, says: “The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split” (Q 54:1). Lo, the Hour is near! Lo, the moon has split! Lo, the world has announced its departure! Today is the training ground; tomorrow is the race.’
I asked my father, ‘Will you race against the people tomorrow?’ He replied, ‘My son, you do not understand; the race is in deeds.’
The next Friday came, my father attended again, and Hudhayfah delivered another sermon, saying:
‘Indeed Allah says: “The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split” (Q 54:1). Lo, the Hour is near, and the moon has split. Lo, the world has taken its leave. Today is the training ground and tomorrow the race; the finish line is the Fire, and the frontrunner is he who reaches Paradise first.’ ”
Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī likewise records this in his Proofs of Prophethood through multiple routes from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Hudhayfah, in similar wording, adding:
“Behold, the moon split during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Today is the training ground and tomorrow the race; the goal is the Fire, and the winner is the one who reaches Paradise first.”
Narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās
Al-Bukhārī (4) said: Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr related to us; Bakr related to us; from Jaʿfar; from ʿUrāk ibn Mālik; from ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah; from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“The moon split during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.”
Al-Bukhārī also recorded it—and so did Muslim (5)—through the narration of Bakr ibn Muḍar, from Jaʿfar ibn Rabīʿah, with the same wording.
