Al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl narrated, through Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“I ask Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him one hundred times each day.” (1)
Al-Bukhārī also transmitted—through al-Firyābī, al-Thawrī, al-Aʿmash, Ibrāhīm, and ʿUbaydah—from ʿAbd-Allāh, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, “Recite to me.” I replied, “Shall I recite to you when it was revealed to you?” He answered, “I love to hear it from someone else.” So I began reciting Sūrat al-Nisāʾ, and when I reached the verse,
“How, then, will it be when We bring from every nation a witness and bring you, [Muḥammad], as a witness against these?” (4:41),
he said, “Enough.” I looked over and saw tears streaming from his eyes. (2)
It is authentically reported that he ﷺ would find a date on his bed and say, “Had I not feared that it might be from the charity dates, I would have eaten it.” (3)
Imām Aḥmad narrated: Wakīʿ related to us, saying that Usāmah ibn Zayd told us, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once found a date beneath his side during the night and ate it. He then remained unable to sleep the entire night. One of his wives asked, “O Messenger of Allah, you were restless tonight.” He replied, “I discovered a date under my side and ate it. We keep some dates for charity, and I feared it might have been one of them.” (4) Aḥmad alone transmitted this report. Usāmah ibn Zayd al-Laythī is a transmitter whose reports appear in Muslim.
Our conviction is that this date was certainly not from the charity dates, for he ﷺ was divinely protected. Yet, out of the perfection of his scrupulousness, he spent the whole night awake.
It is soundly established that he ﷺ said: “[By Allah,] I am the most God-fearing among you and the one who knows best what to avoid.” (5)
In another ḥadīth he said, “Leave that which makes you doubt for that which brings no doubt.” (6)
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated, from Thābit, from Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbd-Allāh ibn al-Shakhkhīr, from his father, who said: I came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying, and from his chest there issued a sound like the boiling of a cauldron—indeed, in another wording, a sound like the grinding of a mill—because of his weeping.
