Most of the day went by, and I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting alone in the mosque. I offered him the greeting of peace, and he said to me,
“What has become of the matter that was in your hands?”
I replied, “Allah has paid off every debt that was upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; nothing remains.”
He asked, “Is there anything left over?”
I said, “Yes—two dinars.”
He said, “See that you relieve me of them, for I shall not enter the house of any of my family until you have done so.”
No one came to us, so he spent the night in the mosque until morning, and he remained in the mosque the next day as well. Toward the end of that day two riders arrived. I went with them, clothed them, and fed them.
When he had performed the late-night prayer (al-ʿatamah) he summoned me and said, “What has become of that which was with you?”
I said, “Allah has freed you from it.” He proclaimed, “Allāhu akbar,” and praised Allah, fearing that death might overtake him while anything remained in his possession. I then followed him until he reached his wives; he greeted each one in turn, and then came to the place where he would sleep. That is the incident you asked me about.
Al-Tirmidhī relates in al-Shamāʾil: Hārūn ibn Mūsā ibn Abī ʿAlqamah al-Madanī told us—my father told me—from Hishām ibn Saʿd, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb: A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him for something. He replied, “I have nothing to give you, but obtain it for me on credit; when something comes to me I shall settle it.” ʿUmar said, “Messenger of Allah, you have given him already; Allah has not burdened you with what you cannot manage.” The Prophet ﷺ disliked ʿUmar’s remark. Then a man from the Anṣār said, “Messenger of Allah, spend—and do not fear poverty from the Lord of the Throne.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, and his smile was plainly visible because of what the Anṣārī had said, and he declared, “This is what I have been commanded.”
In another report he said, “Indeed, they ask of me, and Allah refuses to let me be miserly.”
On the day of Ḥunayn, when they asked him about distributing the spoils, he said, “By Allah, were I to have livestock equal in number to these thorny trees, I would distribute it among you; then you would never find me stingy, cowardly, or untruthful.” ﷺ
Al-Tirmidhī also narrates: ʿAlī ibn Ḥajar told us—Shurayk told us—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, from al-Rubayyiʿ bint Muʿawwiḍ ibn ʿAfrāʾ, who said: I brought the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a small tray of fresh dates and some downy cucumbers, and he gave me a handful of jewelry—or of gold—in return.
Imām Aḥmad likewise reports: Sufyān told us—from Muṭarrif—from ʿAṭiyyah—from Abū Saʿīd— that the Prophet ﷺ said:
