Qutaybah said: Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from Thābit, from Anas, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not keep anything back for the next day.” (1)
This ḥadīth is recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim (2). What is meant is that he did not set aside for the morrow anything liable to spoil quickly, such as food and the like. For in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (3) it is related from ʿUmar that he said: “The property of Banū al-Naḍīr was among that which Allah restored to His Messenger, for which the Muslims had not urged on horse or camel. From it he would reserve his family’s provision for a year, and what remained he spent on horses and weapons as equipment in the path of Allah ﷿.”
What we have stated is supported by the report transmitted by Imām Aḥmad (4): Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us—(he said: Hīlāl ibn Suwayd Abū Muʿallā informed me) (5)—who said: I heard Anas ibn Mālik say, “I presented three small birds to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gave one of them to his servant. The next day she brought it back to him, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Did I not forbid you to keep anything for tomorrow? Surely Allah brings the provision of every tomorrow.’”
Bilāl’s report on the matter is as follows. Al-Bayhaqī (6) said: Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Bishrān narrated to us; Abū Muḥammad Jaʿfar ibn Naṣīr informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd-Allāh al-Baṣrī narrated to us; Bakkār ibn Muḥammad informed us; ʿAbd-Allāh ibn ʿAwn, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, reported that the Messenger of Allah entered upon Bilāl and found with him a heap of dates. He said:
“What is this, Bilāl?”
He replied, “Dates I am storing.”
The Prophet said:
“Woe to you, Bilāl! Do you not fear that they may turn into smoke for you in the Fire? Spend, Bilāl, and fear no scarcity from the Lord of the Throne.”
Al-Bayhaqī (7) also cited it with his chain from Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī (8) and Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, both of them from Abū Tawbah
