On the authority of Abū Hurayrah: One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was served some hot food, which he ate. When he had finished he said, “Praise be to Allah; no hot food has entered my stomach for such-and-such a length of time.”
Imām Aḥmad said (1): ʿAbd al-Ṣamad related to us; ʿAmmār—Abū Hāshim, the saffron dealer—(2) related to us, from Anas ibn Mālik: Fāṭimah handed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a morsel of barley bread, and he said, “This is the first food your father has eaten in three days.” Aḥmad alone transmits this report (3).
Imām Aḥmad also narrated—from ʿAffān—and al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah (4) likewise—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿāwiyah; both of them from Thābit ibn Yazīd, from Hilāl ibn Khabbāb al-ʿAbdī al-Kūfī, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pass consecutive nights hungry, he and his household finding nothing for supper, and their usual bread was barley bread. This is Aḥmad’s wording.
Al-Tirmidhī said in al-Shamāʾil (5): ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dārimī related to us; ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ ibn Ghayyāth related to us, from his father, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Yaḥyā al-Aslamī, from Yazīd ibn (6) Abī Umayyah al-Aʿwar, from Abū Yūsuf ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ take a piece of barley bread, place a date on it, and say, “This serves as the relish for that,” and then he ate.
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, through al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, she said: The drink most beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sweet and cool (7).
Al-Bukhārī narrated (8)—through Qatādah, from Anas—who said: I do not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever saw a thinly refined loaf until he met his Lord, nor a whole roasted sheep.
