Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Al-Bukhārī likewise related it—and so did al-Nasāʾī (1)—through Qutaybah, from Yaʿqūb ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qārī, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl, with the same wording.

Al-Tirmidhī said (2): “ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad al-Dūrī narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Abī Bukayr narrated to us; Jarīr ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us, from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir. I heard Abū Umāmah say,
‘There was never any barley bread left over from the household of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’
He then remarked, ‘Ḥasan, ṣaḥīḥ, gharīb.’

Imām Aḥmad said (3): “Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Kaysān; Abū Ḥāzim narrated to me, saying,
‘I saw Abū Hurayrah pointing with his finger again and again and declaring, “By Him in Whose Hand is the soul of Abū Hurayrah! The Prophet of Allah and his family never ate their fill of wheat bread three consecutive days until he departed this world.” ’ ”

Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah also transmitted it (4) through the narration of Yazīd ibn Kaysān.

In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (5) there is the report of Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“The family of Muḥammad ﷺ never had their fill of wheat bread for three consecutive days from the time they arrived in Madinah until he went on his way.”

Imām Aḥmad said (6): “Hāshim narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us, from Abū Ḥamzah, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
‘The family of Muḥammad never had their fill of wheat bread three days in a row until he was taken, and never was even a single crumb removed from his table until he was taken.’ ”

Aḥmad also said (7): “Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; Muṭīʿ al-Ghazāl narrated to us, from Kurdūs, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah departed this life while his household had never eaten their fill of wheat-based food for three consecutive days.’ ”

Imām Aḥmad further said (8): “Ḥusayn (9) narrated to us; Duwayd (10) narrated to us, from Abū Sahl, from Sulaymān ibn Rūmān—”

(1) Al-Bukhari, Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 5413, Kitāb al-ʾAṭʿima); al-Nasāʾī, al-Riqāq (from al-Kubrā) in al-Tuhfa (no. 4785). (2) al-Tirmidhī, al-Jāmiʿ (no. 2359, Kitāb al-Zuhd); al-Shamāʾil (no. 144) “On the description of the Prophet’s bread.” (3) Musnad Aḥmad, 2:434. (4) Muslim, Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 2976, Kitāb al-Zuhd); al-Tirmidhī, al-Jāmiʿ (no. 2358, Kitāb al-Zuhd); Ibn Mājah, Sunan (no. 3343, Kitāb al-ʾAṭʿima). (5) al-Bukhari, Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 5416, Kitāb al-ʾAṭʿima); Muslim, Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 2970, Kitāb al-Zuhd). (6) Musnad Aḥmad (6:156) has a weak isnād due to Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥa (son of Maṣrif) and Abū Ḥamza Maymūn al-Aʿwar. Nevertheless, the statement “The family of Muḥammad never ate their fill of coarse wheat bread three days in succession until he passed away” appears in an authentic chain in Aḥmad (6:42) and Muslim (2970). The phrase “nor did a single morsel remain on his table until his death” is not sound. (7) Musnad Aḥmad (6:255); the hadith is authentic with corroborating reports. (8) Musnad Aḥmad (6:71). (9) In the printed edition it appears as “Ḥasan,” a corruption; the correct narrator is Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Bahrām al-Marwazī. (10) Duwayd ibn Nāfiʿ, Abū ʿĪsā al-Shāmī; some transmitters (e.g. al-Taqrīb) record his name with an initial ʿayn.
