the poor.’
This ḥadīth is weak and cannot stand on the basis of its chain, for it contains Yazīd ibn Sinān Abū Furwah al-Ruhāwī, who is extremely weak (1). Allah knows best.
Al-Tirmidhī related it through another route, saying (2): “ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Wāṣil al-Kūfī narrated to us; Thābit ibn Muḥammad al-ʿĀbid al-Kūfī narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn al-Nuʿmān al-Laythī narrated to us, from Anas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘O Allah, let me live as one who is poor, let me die as one who is poor, and resurrect me in the company of the poor on the Day of Resurrection.’
ʿĀʾishah asked, ‘Why is that, O Messenger of Allah?’ He replied:
‘They will enter Paradise forty autumns before their wealthy counterparts. O ʿĀʾishah, do not turn a poor person away even with half a date. O ʿĀʾishah, love the poor and draw them near, for Allah will draw you near on the Day of Resurrection.’ ”
Al-Tirmidhī then remarked, “This ḥadīth is gharīb.”
I say: its chain is weak and its text contains irregularity (3). Allah knows best.
Imām Aḥmad said (4): “ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār narrated to us, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd:
It was said to him, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever see al-naqiyy with his own eyes before he passed away?’—meaning refined white flour. He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah never saw al-naqiyy with his own eyes until he met Allah.’ He was asked, ‘Did you have sieves in the time of the Messenger of Allah?’ He answered, ‘We had no sieves.’ They asked, ‘Then how did you handle the barley?’ He said, ‘We would blow on it, and whatever husk flew off, flew off.’ ”
Al-Tirmidhī likewise reported it (6) through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār with the same content, adding: “Then we would soak it (7) and knead it.” He judged it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ. Mālik also narrated it from Abū Ḥāzim.
I add: It is also found in al-Bukhārī (8), through Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, from Muḥammad ibn Muṭarrif ibn Ghassān al-Madanī, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd with this wording.
