Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī reports (1): al-Masʿūdī narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah lay down on a woven mat, and its ridges left marks on his skin. I began to rub the marks away and said, ‘May my father and mother be your ransom! Had you only informed us, we would have spread something for you to lie on.’ He replied:
‘What have I to do with this world? My likeness and the world’s is but that of a rider who sheltered for a while beneath a tree, then moved on and left it behind.’”
Ibn Mājah (2) recorded the same ḥadīth through Yaḥyā ibn Ḥakīm from Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, and al-Tirmidhī (3) also related it through Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kindī from Zayd ibn Ḥabbāb, both from al-Masʿūdī; al-Tirmidhī declared it “ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ” (4).
Imām Aḥmad transmitted a parallel report from Ibn ʿAbbās, stating (5): ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, Abū Saʿīd, and ʿAffān told us; they said: Thābit narrated to us; Hilāl narrated to us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās that ʿUmar entered upon the Messenger of Allah while he was reclining on a reed mat that had left its imprint on his side. ʿUmar said, “O Messenger of Allah, if only you would take a softer mattress than this.” He replied:
“What have I to do with this world? My example and the world’s is like a traveler on a sweltering day who rests for an hour in the shade of a tree, then rises and leaves it behind.” Aḥmad alone recorded this chain.
In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (6), through al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, from Abū Hurayrah, the Prophet said:
“If I possessed gold equal to [Mount] Uḥud, I would not wish three nights to pass while any of it remained with me—apart from an amount kept to discharge a debt.”
And in both Ṣaḥīḥs (7), through ʿImārah ibn al-Qaʿqāʿ, from Abū Zurʿah, from Abū Hurayrah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“O Allah, make the provision of the family of Muḥammad only what is sufficient for them.”
As for the ḥadīth related by Ibn Mājah (8), transmitted through Yazīd ibn Sinān, from Ibn al-Mubārak, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Abū Saʿīd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“O Allah, let me live as one who is poor, let me die as one who is poor, and resurrect me in the company of …”
