In another version related by Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Are you not content that they have the life of this world while the Hereafter is ours?” I replied, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” He then said, “So praise Allah.”
When the month had elapsed, Allah, Exalted is He, commanded him to give his wives the choice and revealed: “O Prophet, say to your wives: If you desire the life of this world and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and release you in a gracious manner. But if you desire Allah, His Messenger, and the Abode of the Hereafter, then truly Allah has prepared for those of you who do good an immense reward” (al-Aḥzāb 28–29).
We have discussed this at length in our Qurʾānic commentary, where we noted that he began with ʿĀʾishah. He said to her, “I will lay a matter before you, so do not rush until you have consulted your parents,” and he recited the verse to her. She replied, “In such a matter would I consult my parents? I choose Allah, His Messenger, and the Abode of the Hereafter.” The rest of his wives—may Allah ennoble them and be well-pleased with them—said the same.
Mubārak ibn Faḍālah reports from al-Ḥasan, from Anas:
“I entered upon the Messenger of Allah while he was lying on a bedstead woven with leather straps, with a pillow of tanned leather stuffed with palm-fibre beneath his head. ʿUmar and a group of Companions came in after me. The Messenger of Allah shifted slightly, and ʿUmar saw the marks the straps had left on his side and began to weep. The Prophet asked, ‘What makes you weep, O ʿUmar?’ He replied, ‘How could I not weep, when Chosroes and Caesar enjoy the comforts of this world, and you are in the state I see?’ The Prophet said, ‘O ʿUmar, are you not content that they have the world and we have the Hereafter?’ ‘Indeed,’ ʿUmar answered. ‘So it is,’ he said.” Al-Bayhaqī narrated it in this form.
Imām Aḥmad also transmitted—Abū al-Naḍr told us; Mubārak related from al-Ḥasan, from Anas ibn Mālik—that he said:
“I entered upon the Messenger of Allah while he was reclining on a bedstead wrapped with leather straps, with a pillow of tanned leather stuffed with palm-fibre beneath his head. Some of his Companions entered, and ʿUmar followed them. The Messenger of Allah shifted, and ʿUmar saw that nothing lay between his side and the straps; the straps had left their imprint on his blessed side, and ʿUmar wept. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, ‘What causes you to weep, O ʿUmar?’ He replied, ‘By Allah, I weep only because I know you are more honoured by Allah than Chosroes and Caesar, yet they live in worldly ease while you, O Messenger of Allah, are in the state I see.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Are you not content that they have the world and we have the Hereafter?’ ‘Indeed,’ he said. ‘Then so it is,’ the Prophet replied.”
