Al-Tirmidhī also records it in al-Shamāʾil (1) through al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Bazzār, from Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim, with this very chain.
I say: this ḥadīth belongs to the rarities and contains some irregularity; Mujālid ibn Saʿīd is subject to criticism, and Allah knows best.
Al-Tirmidhī further states, in the chapter entitled “The Prophet’s Jest” in his al-Shamāʾil (2): “ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us; Muṣʿab ibn al-Miqdām narrated to us; al-Mubārak ibn Faḍālah narrated to us; from al-Ḥasan, who said:
An elderly woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah that He admit me into Paradise.’ He replied, ‘Mother of so-and-so, no old woman will enter Paradise.’ She turned away weeping, whereupon he said, ‘Tell her that she will not enter it while she is old, for Allah the Exalted says: “Indeed, We have brought them forth in a new creation and made them virgins …” (Q 56:35–36).’”
From this route the report is mursal.
Al-Tirmidhī also relates (4): “ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad al-Dawrī told us; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Shaqīq told us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak told us; from Usāmah ibn Zayd; from Saʿīd al-Maqburī; from Abū Hurayrah, who said: They asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, you joke with us?’ He answered, ‘I only speak the truth.’”
The expression tudāʿibunā means “you jest with us.” Al-Tirmidhī likewise recorded it in his Jāmiʿ, in the chapter on filial piety, with this same chain, and then remarked: “This is a ḥasan ḥadīth.”
Section: His ﷺ Asceticism, His Turning Away from This World, and His Diligent Striving for the Abode of Permanence
Allah the Exalted says:
“Do not let your eyes stretch toward what We have given to pairs of them—the splendor of the life of this world—through which We test them; the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.” (20:131)
He also says:
“Keep yourself patient alongside those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face. Let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of worldly life; and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows his own desires, and whose affair is ever in neglect.” (18:28)
And He says:
“So turn away from him who turns his back on Our remembrance and desires only the life of this world; that is the limit of their knowledge.” (53:29–30)
And He says:
“We have certainly given you the seven oft-repeated verses and the mighty Qur’an. So do not let your eyes covet what We have bestowed on some pairs of them; nor grieve over them; and lower your wing to the believers.” (15:87–88)
There are many other verses on this theme.
