He found that they had already made peace, so he said to them, “Admit me into your reconciliation just as you involved me in your dispute.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “We have done so—indeed, we have done so.”
Abū Dāwūd relates (1): Muʾammal ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us; from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-ʿAlāʾ; from Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allah; from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlani; from ʿAwf ibn Mālik al-Ashjaʿī, who said:
“I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the expedition of Tabūk while he was in a leather tent. I greeted him with salām, and he returned it and said, ‘Enter.’ I asked, ‘Shall I enter in my entirety, O Messenger of Allah?’ He replied, ‘Yes, in your entirety,’ so I entered.”
We were also told (2) by Ṣafwān ibn Ṣāliḥ; al-Walīd ibn ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀmila narrated to us: The question “Shall I enter in my entirety?” was only asked because the tent was so small.
Abū Dāwūd further said (3): Ibrāhīm ibn Mahdī narrated to us; Sharīk narrated to us; from ʿĀṣim, from Anas, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once said to me, ‘O two-eared one!’”
I add: Of the same sort is what Imām Aḥmad transmitted (4): ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us; from Thābit, from Anas—that a desert Arab named Zāhir used to bring gifts from the desert to the Prophet ﷺ, and whenever he wished to return, the Prophet ﷺ would outfit him for the journey. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Zāhir is our desert-dweller, and we are his townsfolk.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved him, though he was an unattractive man. One day the Prophet ﷺ came upon him while he was selling his goods, embraced him from behind—Zāhir not realizing who it was—and Zāhir cried, “Let me go! Who is this?” When he turned and recognized the Prophet ﷺ, he pressed his back against the Prophet’s chest as firmly as he could. Meanwhile the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept saying, “Who will buy this slave?” Zāhir protested, “O Messenger of Allah, then by Allah you will find me worthless!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “But in Allah’s sight you are not worthless; rather, in Allah’s sight you are precious.”
