I once asked ʿĀʾishah, “What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do when he was with his family?” She replied, “He used to assist his household; but when the time for prayer arrived, he would go out to perform it.” (1)
Wakīʿ and Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar likewise narrated to us, saying: Shuʿbah related to us, from al-Ḥakam, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, who said: I asked ʿĀʾishah, “What did the Prophet ﷺ do when he entered his home?” She said, “He would busy himself serving his family, and when the prayer time came he would go out and pray.” (2)
Al-Bukhārī also recorded this report (3) through Ādam, from Shuʿbah.
Imām Aḥmad (4) said: ʿAbdah related to us; Hishām ibn ʿUrwah related to us, from an unnamed man who said: I asked ʿĀʾishah, “What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do inside his house?” She answered, “He would mend his garment, patch his sandals, and the like.” This chain, however, is disconnected in this version.
ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: Maʿmar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah and Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, who said: A man asked ʿĀʾishah, “Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do any work in his house?” She replied, “Yes. He used to patch his sandals and sew his garment, just as any one of you does in his own house.” Al-Bayhaqī transmitted it (5) with a continuous chain.
Al-Bayhaqī further said: Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Bishrān informed us; Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Bakhtarī—dictating—told us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Sullamī narrated to us; Abū Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to me, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿAmrah, who said: I asked ʿĀʾishah, “What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do in his house?” She replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a human being like other people: he would delouse his garment, milk his goat, and serve himself.” (6)
Al-Tirmidhī also recorded it in al-Shamāʾil (7) through Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿAmrah, who said: It was asked of ʿĀʾishah, “What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do in his house?” … [and so forth].
Ibn ʿAsākir (8) likewise transmitted it through Abū Usāmah, from Ḥārithah ibn Muḥammad al-Anṣārī, from ʿAmrah, who said:
