He also said:
“Every single day, when people rise in the morning, two angels come down. One of them proclaims, ‘O Allah, grant a substitute to the one who spends,’ while the other says, ‘O Allah, bring ruin to the one who withholds.’” (1)
In another ḥadīth he said to ʿĀ’ishah:
“Do not hoard, lest Allah withhold from you; do not tie up your purse, lest Allah tie up His bounty for you.” (2)
And in the authentic narration he declared:
“Allah, Exalted is He, says: ‘Son of Adam, spend, and I shall spend on you.’” (3)
How, then, could he not be the most generous of humankind and the bravest of them, when he was the supreme exemplar of reliance upon Allah—none surpassed him in his trust—utterly confident in Allah’s provision and victory, and ever seeking his Lord’s aid in every matter? Even before his mission, and afterwards, and before his migration, he was a refuge for the poor, the widows, the orphans, the weak, and the destitute, just as his uncle Abū Ṭālib said in the famed poem cited earlier:
No people, by your life, would abandon a leader
who guards their honor—keen, resolute, and bold;
A radiant man whose very face draws down the clouds,
a shelter for orphans, a protector of widows;
To him the threatened of Banū Hāshim hurry for refuge,
and with him they enjoy favor and abundant grace.
Among the proofs of his humility is what Imām Aḥmad relates—through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Thābit (with an addition by al-Nasaʾī: and Ḥumayd) from Anas—that a man once said to the Messenger of Allah , “O our master, son of our master!” The Messenger of Allah replied:
“O people, speak in the manner you are accustomed to and let not Satan beguile you. I am Muḥammad son of ʿAbd Allāh, the Messenger of Allah. By Allah, I do not wish you to exalt me above the rank to which Allah has raised me.” (4)
Muslim also records (5) on the authority of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb that the Messenger of Allah said:
“Do not over-praise me as the Christians over-praised Jesus son of Mary. I am only a servant, so say: ‘the servant of Allah and His Messenger.’”
And Imām Aḥmad said: Yahyā narrated to us, from Shuʿbah, who reported from al-Ḥakam, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, who said:
