Then he likewise reported it through al-Layth (1), from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Jazʾ, who said: “The laughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was no more than a smile.” He then declared the ḥadīth authentic.
Muslim said (2): Yahyā ibn Yahyā narrated to us; Abū Khaythamah narrated to us; from Simāk ibn Ḥarb. I asked Jābir ibn Samurah, “Did you sit with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He replied, “Yes, often. He would not rise from the spot where he had performed the dawn prayer until the sun had risen; once it had risen (3) he would stand up. During that time the Companions would converse, recalling matters from the pre-Islamic days, and they would laugh, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would only smile.”
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī said (4): Shurayk and Qays ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Simāk ibn Ḥarb, who said: I asked Jābir ibn Samurah, “Did you keep the company of the Prophet ﷺ?” He answered, “Yes. He was given to long silences (5) and laughed but little. His Companions would sometimes recite poetry in his presence, or discuss some of their affairs; they would laugh, and he would occasionally smile (6).”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī said (7): Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ and Abū Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿAmr informed us; they said: Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqrī informed us; al-Layth ibn Saʿd related to us, from al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Walīd, that Sulaymān ibn Khārijah told him from Khārijah ibn Zayd—meaning ibn Thābit—that a group of men once entered upon his father and said, “Tell us about some of the qualities of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said, “I was his neighbor. Whenever revelation descended, he would send for me; I would come to him and write it down. When we spoke of worldly matters, he would speak of them with us; when we spoke of the Hereafter, he would speak of it with us; and when we spoke of food, he would speak of it with us. All of this I relate to you about him.”
Al-Tirmidhī also recorded it in al-Shamāʾil (8) through ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Muqrī, with the same wording.
