excessive. His words issued forth like pearls on a string—that is, on account of their beauty, eloquence, clarity, precision, and the sweetness of his tongue (1).
He was the most radiant and comely of people when viewed from afar, and the sweetest and fairest when seen up close—that is, attractive both near and far. I have also mentioned that he was neither tall nor short, but rather combined the finest qualities of each. I further noted that his Companions held him in reverence, served him, and hastened to obey him—something born solely of the majesty he commanded, the greatness he occupied in their hearts, and their love for him. He was never sullen—meaning he did not frown—nor did he disparage anyone, that is, he never belittled a person or deemed his mind deficient. On the contrary, he was gracious in social dealings, excellent in companionship; whoever accompanied him was honored by him and beloved to him, ﷺ.
(Abū Zurʿah said in al-Dalāʾil (2): “Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Yūsuf—meaning Ibn Ṣuwayb—narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Buraydah, that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, had always been the most handsome of mankind.” This is a mursal report.
Abū Zurʿah also said: “Ismāʿīl b. Abān al-Azdi, the paper-seller, narrated to us; ʿAnbasah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from Muḥammad b. Zādhān, from Umm Saʿd, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: ‘I asked, O Messenger of Allah, you enter the privy yet nothing offensive is ever seen from you.’ He replied, ‘Do you not know, ʿĀʾishah, that the earth swallows whatever issues from the prophets so that none of it is ever seen?’” He remarks: “This ḥadīth is deemed objectionable, and Allah knows best.”) (3)
The ḥadīth of Hind b. Abī Hālah (4) on this matter
Hind was the Prophet’s stepson, ﷺ; his mother was Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid and his father Abū Hālah, as already explained.
Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān al-Fasawī, the ḥāfiẓ—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “Saʿīd b. Ḥammād al-Anṣārī al-Miṣrī and Abū Ghassān Mālik b. Ismāʿīl al-Nahdī (5) both narrated to us, saying: ‘Jumayʿ b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿIjlī (6) narrated to us, saying:’”} شئ
