between his shoulders. He then pointed with his forefinger like this and said, “A raised piece of flesh (1) between his shoulders ﷺ.” Aḥmad alone transmitted it through this chain.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Khaṭṭāb Ibn Dihyah al-Miṣrī relates in his book al-Tanwīr fī Mawlid al-Bashīr al-Nadhīr, quoting Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Bishr—better known as al-Ḥakim al-Tirmidhī—that he said:
“The Seal situated between the shoulders of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was like a dove’s egg. On its inner side was written, ‘Allah alone,’ and on its outer side, ‘Go wherever you will, for you are granted victory.’”
He then commented, “This report is strange,” and he declared it unacceptable.
He further said, “Some claim it was made of light.” This was mentioned by Imām Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā ibn Mālik ibn ʿĀyidh in his work Tanaqqul al-Anwār, where he recorded other unusual opinions as well.
Among the finest explanations cited by Ibn Dihyah رحمه الله and earlier scholars for the Seal’s placement between the Prophet’s shoulders ﷺ is that it signified: “No prophet will come after you from behind you.”
He also said, “It was located on the crest of his shoulder, because it is said that this is the point through which Satan enters a human being; thus it served as a safeguard for him ﷺ against Satan.”
I say: We have already cited the aḥādīth proving that there is no prophet after him ﷺ, nor any messenger, when commenting on the verse:
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets; and Allah is fully aware of all things” (al-Aḥzāb 33:40).
A comprehensive chapter collecting various aḥādīth on the physical description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
We have already mentioned—through the narration of Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—that he said, “I never saw anyone like him before or after him.” (2)
