Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

ʿAbd Allah ibn Sarjis said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—I greeted him (1), ate with him (2), drank from his drink, and observed the Seal of Prophethood.” Hāshim added: “It was on the raised part (3) of his left shoulder, as though several black moles had been gathered there, resembling small warts (4).”

It was also transmitted by Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, from ʿĀṣim, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Sarjis, who related the same report. Shuʿbah, however, was uncertain whether the mark was on the raised part of the right shoulder or the left (5).

Muslim likewise recorded it through the narrations of Ḥammād ibn Zayd, ʿAlī ibn Mushir, and ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād—each of them from ʿĀṣim, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Sarjis, who said:
“I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ate bread and meat with him—or, he said, thareed. I then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, may Allah forgive you.’ He replied, ‘And you as well.’ I asked, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah seek forgiveness for you?’ He answered, ‘Yes, and for all of you.’ He then recited: ‘So seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women’ (Q 47:19). After that I walked around behind him and looked at the Seal of Prophethood between his shoulders, on the raised part of his left shoulder; it protruded, and upon it were moles like small warts (6).”

Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī said: Qurrāh ibn Khālid narrated to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrāh narrated to us, from his father, who said:
“I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, let me see the Seal.’ He said, ‘Put your hand in.’ I placed my hand inside his shirt, feeling and looking for the Seal; there it was on the raised part of his shoulder, like an egg. That did not prevent him from supplicating for me while my hand was still inside his shirt (7).”

Al-Nasāʾī also reported it (8) through Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd, from Wahb ibn Jarīr, from Qurrāh ibn Khālid, with this same chain.

Imām Aḥmad said: Wakiʿ narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from Iyād ibn Laqiṭ al-Sadūsī, from Abū Rimthah al-Taymī, who said:
“I set out with my father until we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I saw a trace of henna (9) on his head, and on his shoulder a mark the size of an apple. My father said, ‘I am a physician; shall I not treat it (10) for you?’ He replied, ‘Its physician is the One who created it.’ He then said to my father…”

(1) As in the original; in al-Musnad (5:83) it reads “wa dakhaltu alayhi” (“and I entered upon him”). (2) As in the original; in al-Musnad it reads “wa akaltu min ta’amihi” (“and I ate of his food”). It also appears in al-Musnad (3:434; 5:35) on the authority of Muawiya ibn Qurra from his father. It is sahih.
