The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was of medium height and broad-shouldered (1).
(Al-Zubaydī, transmitting from al-Zuhrī through Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah, likewise says: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was broad-shouldered.”) (2)
Al-Bukhārī (3) relates—through Abū al-Nuʿmān, from Jarīr, from Qatādah, from Anas—that he said: “The Prophet ﷺ had a large head and feet, and his palms were smooth.” From other chains it has already been reported that he ﷺ had thick palms and feet (4); in yet another wording: “his palms and feet were large.”
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān records: Ādam and ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAlī told us; they said: Ibn Abī Dhʾīb narrated to us; Ṣāliḥ, the freedman of al-Tuʾmah, narrated to us that Abū Hurayrah used to describe the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying: “He had sturdy forearms, was broad-shouldered, and had long eyelashes.” (5)
In the ḥadīth of Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, from ʿAlī, it is said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had thick palms and feet, prominent joints, and a long line of hair extending from chest to navel.” (6)
We have already cited the report of Ḥajjāj, from Simāk, from Jābir ibn Samurah, who said: “The shanks of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were slight” (7)—that is, they were not bulky.
Suraqah ibn Mālik ibn Juʿshum said: “I looked at his shanks”—and in another version: “at his feet while they were in the stirrup”—“and they were like the white inner shoot of a date-palm.” (8)
Muslim relates (9) from Jābir ibn Samurah that “he had a wide mouth,” explained as “a large mouth”; “well-defined eyes,” explained as “long in the eye-slit”; and “slim heels,” explained as “little flesh on the heel.” Such traits are more fitting and becoming for men.
