He had just a slight sprinkling of grey: a few hairs in the small tuft beneath his lower lip, a few at the temples, and a few on his head (1).
al-Bukhārī said:
“Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Hammām narrated to us, from Qatādah, who said: I asked Anas, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dye his hair?’ He replied, ‘No; there was only a little (grey) in his two temples.’ ” (2)
Al-Bukhārī also relates through ʿIṣām ibn Khālid, from Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān:
“I asked ʿAbd Allāh ibn Busr al-Sulamī, ‘You saw the Messenger of Allah—was he old?’ He said, ‘In the tuft beneath his lower lip there were a few white hairs.’ ” (3)
A similar report from Jābir ibn Samurah has already been mentioned (4).
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, via Abū Isḥāq from Abū Juḥayfah, it is related:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah, and this part of him was white,”—meaning the tuft beneath his lower lip (5).
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān said:
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī narrated to us; ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mawhab al-Qurashī narrated: We entered upon Umm Salamah, and she produced some hair of the Messenger of Allah; it was reddish, dyed with henna and katam.” (6)
Al-Bukhārī transmits the same report through Ismāʿīl ibn Mūsā, from Sallām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mawhab, from Umm Salamah (7).
Al-Bayhaqī said:
“Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Ṣaghānī narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Abī Bukayr narrated to us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mawhab, who said: ‘Umm Salamah kept a large silver vial (jiljal) that contained some of the Prophet’s hair. Whenever someone was stricken with fever, he would send to her; she would soak the hair in water, and the person would then sprinkle the water over his face.’ He added, ‘My family once sent me to her…’ ”
