Ibn ʿAsākir likewise transmitted it through Ḥarmalah (1), from Ibn Wahb, from ʿImrān, from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, from Abū Yūnus, from Abū Hurayrah, and cited it with the wording: “It was as though the sun coursed across his face.”
Al-Bayhaqī (2) said: “ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdān informed us; Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṣaffār informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Ḥajjāj narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī—meaning Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah—from his father, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was of a radiant, fair complexion.’
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī said: “al-Masʿūdī related to us, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Hurmuz, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a face suffused with a rosy glow.’ (3)
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān said: “Ibn al-Aṣbahānī narrated to us; Shurayk narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, who said: ‘ʿAlī described the Prophet ﷺ to us, saying, “He was white, tinged with redness.”’ (4) Al-Tirmidhī (5) recorded a similar report through al-Masʿūdī, from ʿUthmān ibn Muslim ibn Hurmuz, and declared: “This ḥadīth is sound.” (7)
Al-Bayhaqī (8) remarked: “This wording has also been reported from ʿAlī through another chain.”
I say: It was narrated by Ibn Jurayj, from Ṣāliḥ ibn Saʿīd, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, from ʿAlī.
Al-Bayhaqī (9) further explained: “What is meant by mushrab—‘tinged’—is that a trace of redness appeared because of sun and wind, whereas the skin beneath his garments was radiant white.”
