Al-Bukhārī also reports (1): “Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barrāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, who said: The Prophet ﷺ was of medium height, broad-shouldered, with hair that reached the lobes of his ears. I once saw him wearing a red garment, and I have never seen anything more beautiful than him.”
Yūsuf ibn Abī Isḥāq transmitted from his father that the wording is: “reaching his shoulders.”
Imām Aḥmad likewise relates (2): “Wakīʿ narrated to us; Sufyān (3) narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barrāʾ, who said: I have never seen anyone with flowing hair look more beautiful in a red garment than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. His hair fell upon his shoulders; he was broad-shouldered, neither tall nor short.” Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Nasāʾī also transmit this report through Wakīʿ (5).
Imām Aḥmad further states (6): “Aswad ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us; Isrāʾīl informed us.” (He also said: “Yaḥyā ibn Abī Bukayr narrated to us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, who said:) “I heard al-Barrāʾ say: ‘I have never seen anyone in Allah’s creation look more handsome in a red outfit than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his thick locks reached his shoulders.’” Ibn Abī Bukayr adds: “They hung close to his shoulders.”
Abū Isḥāq—so he clarified—said: “I heard him relate this tradition many times, and he never narrated it without smiling.”
Al-Bukhārī has recorded this ḥadīth in the Book of Dress, al-Tirmidhī in al-Shamāʾil, and al-Nasāʾī in the Book of Adornment, all through the transmission of Isrāʾīl (7).
