Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

He possessed a saddle called al-Dāj.
He owned a gray mule known as Duldul.
He had a she-camel named al-Qaṣwāʾ.
He had a donkey called Yaʿfūr.
He had a carpet known as al-Karr.
He had a short spear (ʿanaza)[1] called al-Namir.
He possessed a small water jug called al-Ṣādir.
He had a mirror that was simply known as “the Mirror.”
He had a pair of scissors[2] called al-Jāmiʿ.
He possessed a staff of shawḥaṭ wood called al-Mamshūq.

This is most unusual indeed.

I say: It has already been reported from several Companions that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left behind neither dinar nor dirham, neither male slave nor bondwoman, apart from a mule and a plot of land which he made a charitable endowment. This necessarily means that he ﷺ set free all the male and female slaves we have mentioned, and devoted to charity all the weapons, animals, furnishings, and other belongings we have cited—and those we have not.

As for his mule, it was the gray one, which was also white—Allah knows best. It was the mule presented to him by al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Alexandria—whose name was Jurayj ibn Minā—among other gifts he sent. This was the very animal the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode on the day of Ḥunayn, when he advanced upon the enemy ranks proclaiming his noble name, displaying courage and reliance upon Allah.

It is said that the mule lived long after him, passing into the care of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib during his caliphate, and surviving even beyond that to the time of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, who would shake out the barley for it so that, weakened by age, it could eat.

As for his donkey Yaʿfūr—diminutively called ʿUfayr—he ﷺ would occasionally ride it.

Aḥmad[3] relates, through the chain of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Marthad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Yaznī[4], from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zurayr[5], that ʿAlī said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to ride a donkey known as ʿUfayr.”

(1) In the printed edition it reads “(numra),” which does not appear in the manuscript. (2) In the printed edition it reads “(al-Jah).” (3) Musnad Ahmad (vol. 1, p. 111); it is classified as a hasan (good) hadith by other scholars. (4) Both the printed edition and the manuscript read “(Yazid ibn Abd Allah al-Awfi),” which contains two corruptions—see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalāʾ (vol. 4, p. 284). (5) Both the manuscript and the printed edition read “(Razin),” as noted above.
